Chapter 8 - ADRIAN’S OFFER

I told the security guard not to let Adrian upstairs.

Maya called Sergeant Ruiz.

Within minutes, two officers entered the lobby.

Adrian did not resist.

He claimed he only wanted to speak with his wife.

Because the protective order was still being processed, the officers could not arrest him for appearing at the building.

They warned him to leave.

He refused until I agreed to speak through the lobby intercom.

His face appeared on the screen inside my apartment.

He looked tired but not remorseful.

“You ruined my family in less than twenty-four hours,” he said.

“You assaulted me less than twenty-four hours ago.”

“I lost control.”

“You made a choice.”

“I was under pressure.”

“So was I.”

“You embarrassed my mother.”

I almost disconnected the call.

Then he raised a small black drive.

“This contains the original Golden Crest records.”

“Where did you get it?”

“My father gave it to me.”

“Why?”

“Insurance.”

“Against whom?”

“My mother.”

That answer kept me listening.

Adrian glanced at the officers.

“I will give this to you under one condition.”

“No.”

“You haven’t heard the condition.”

“I will not bargain with the person who attacked me.”

His jaw tightened.

“You always have to be superior.”

“I am not superior.”

“I am simply refusing to be controlled.”

He lowered the drive.

“My mother arranged the forged documents.”

“She convinced the family that your apartment was necessary to secure the loan.”

“Why my apartment?”

“Because the bank wanted unconnected collateral.”

“Caldwell assets were already overleveraged.”

“Your property had clean title and enough equity to complete the package.”

“That still does not explain why she wanted ownership.”

“She planned to transfer it into a trust and borrow against it repeatedly.”

I stared at him.

“She intended to steal everything I had.”

“She believed you owed us.”

“I owed you nothing.”

“You married into the family.”

“That was my mistake.”

The words struck him.

For one moment, his arrogance cracked.

Then he lifted the drive again.

“Help me avoid prison.”

“I’ll give you evidence against my mother.”

“You are already offering evidence against your mother.”

“You have no reason to believe the drive contains anything.”

“You have no reason to believe I care.”

He moved closer to the camera.

“I know what happened to your father.”

My body went cold.

“What happened?”

“Not through an intercom.”

“Then tell Sergeant Ruiz.”

“I want a written agreement.”

“You are not in a position to negotiate.”

His eyes hardened.

“You sound exactly like my mother.”

I disconnected the call.

Adrian threw the sign against the lobby wall.

The officers escorted him outside.

At midnight, the security guard found the black drive taped beneath the front desk.

There was no note.

Maya insisted that we hand it directly to investigators.

Mercer arrived before dawn.

The drive contained bank records, emails, inspection reports, and private family recordings.

One video showed Eleanor meeting with the county official who approved Golden Crest.

Another showed Charles ordering an employee to destroy soil samples.

The final file was audio only.

Adrian’s voice spoke first.

“What if Claire discovers the forgery?”

May you like

Eleanor answered.

“Then we remind her what happened to her father.”
