Chapter 5: The Desperate Search

Panic, cold and sharp, finally pierced through Jasper's ego.

Hailey.

His quiet, unassuming wife. The woman who shopped at discount stores and clipped coupons. The woman whose father he thought was a retired, lower-middle-class contractor.

He bolted out of the building. He needed his car. He needed to find her.

He reached the executive parking garage, only to find a tow truck hitching up his luxury black SUV.

“Hey! What are you doing? That’s my car!” Jasper yelled, running toward the driver.

The burly driver held up a clipboard. “Vehicle is registered to Robertson Global Corp. Reported stolen by the owner this morning. I’m just doing my job, pal.”

Jasper watched helplessly as the symbol of his success was towed out into the street. His chest tightened. He pulled out his phone and frantically dialed my number again. Still straight to voicemail.

He hailed a cab, his hands shaking. “Take me to Robertson Global Tower. Now.”

When he arrived at the imposing, sixty-story glass skyscraper, he sprinted into the lobby.

“I need to see Finnley Robertson! I’m his son-in-law!” he shouted at the front desk.

Before the receptionist could even blink, two massive security guards materialized. They didn't speak. They simply grabbed Jasper by the arms, lifted him off his feet, and threw him out onto the cold concrete of the sidewalk.
