He checked his cracked phone. The bus was delayed. Again.
He looked up as a convoy of three matte-black SUVs glided smoothly through the deep puddles on the street.
As the lead vehicle slowed down for a red light directly in front of the bus stop, Jasper peered through the rain. The rear window rolled down just a fraction, revealing the profile of a woman.
She was breathtaking. Powerful. She was speaking on a cell phone, a diamond-studded watch glittering on her wrist, a beautiful toddler laughing in the seat beside her.
For a fraction of a second, she turned her head. Her eyes met his through the rain.

There was no anger in her gaze. No triumph. Just complete and total indifference. She looked at him the way one looks at a piece of litter on the sidewalk.
The light turned green. The window rolled up. The luxury SUV pulled away, leaving Jasper standing in the freezing rain, waiting for a bus he would be taking for the rest of his life.
