Chapter 6: The Mother-in-Law’s Folly
While Jasper was being thrown onto the pavement, Gillian and Priscilla were having a spa day at the most exclusive resort in the city.
“Add the gold-leaf facial to my tab,” Gillian told the attendant, waving a hand dismissively. “My son is paying for everything.”
She handed over the sleek, black American Express card Jasper had given her—a card secretly tied directly to Apex Solutions' corporate account.
The attendant swiped it. A red light flashed.
“I’m sorry, ma'am, it’s declined.”
Gillian scoffed. “Try it again. The machine is obviously broken. Do you know who my son is?”
The attendant tried again. “Still declined. And... I’m getting a prompt here to confiscate the card, ma'am.”
“Excuse me?!” Priscilla snapped, sitting up in her plush robe. “Call the manager right now.”
The manager arrived promptly, but he wasn't alone. Two police officers stood behind him.

“Gillian and Priscilla Hayes?” the officer asked. “We’ve received a report of credit card fraud from the financial division of Robertson Global. You’re using a corporate card that has been flagged for embezzlement. We’re going to need you to come with us.”
In their luxurious white robes, with clay masks still drying on their faces, Jasper’s mother and sister were escorted out of the spa in handcuffs, right past a lobby full of staring elites.
