Two years later.
The sound of my heels clicked against the polished marble floor of the Robertson Global executive suite.
“Good morning, Ms. Robertson,” my assistant said, handing me an iPad with the day’s agenda. “The board is ready for you in conference room A.”
“Thank you, Sarah,” I smiled.
I walked into the boardroom, taking my seat at the head of the long oak table. My father sat to my right, looking at me with a pride so fierce it practically radiated from him. I had officially taken over as Chief Operating Officer.
The timid, people-pleasing girl who had hidden her identity for a man's approval was completely dead. In her place was a woman forged in fire, sharp, decisive, and untouchable.
After the meeting, I went down to the company’s private day-care center. Toby was playing with blocks, a bright, happy two-year-old who had never known a day of neglect.
I picked him up, breathing in the sweet scent of his hair.

He giggled, wrapping his tiny arms around my neck. We walked out to the private garage, where Marcus was waiting by the door of a sleek, armored SUV. He opened the door for us, and I strapped Toby into his car seat, feeling nothing but profound, unshakable peace.
