Chapter 12 - Plan B

The pills were prescription sedatives.

They were not mine.

But Michael’s plan suddenly became clear.

If I did not explode at dinner, the drugs would create another path to emergency custody.

Police searched my car.

The bag was still there.

It had been taped beneath the driver’s seat.

Beside it was an opened bottle of vodka.

I rarely drank.

Anyone close to me knew that.

But a police officer finding sedatives and alcohol inside my vehicle after an emotional anniversary confrontation could have created exactly the story Michael needed.

The detective photographed everything.

“This is serious.”

I stared at the bag.

“They were going to make me look intoxicated?”

Daniel nodded.

“Possibly arrested.”

My stomach turned.

“What if I had driven the children home?”

Nobody answered.

That possibility frightened me more than the custody scheme.

Vanessa was brought in for questioning.

Her attorney insisted she knew nothing about the drugs.

Michael remained missing.

Then the black phone revealed another message.

Michael.

No pills.

I’m serious.

Vanessa.

Too late.

Michael.

Take them out of the car.

Vanessa.

Stop pretending you have principles now.

That exchange changed the direction of the investigation.

Michael had participated in the scheme.

But Vanessa had escalated it beyond his instructions.

Neither was innocent.

Yet Vanessa appeared willing to risk my safety to complete the plan.

Police searched her apartment.

They found a matching prescription bottle.

The medication had been prescribed to her six months earlier.

By Dr. Samuel Whitaker.

The same doctor whose statement appeared in Michael’s affidavit.

Detectives contacted him.

Dr. Whitaker denied ever writing the statement about my mental health.

He demanded to see the document.

His signature had been forged.

Another crime.

Another lie.

Then he revealed something else.

Vanessa had visited his office two weeks earlier.

She claimed she had lost some of her medication.

She requested an early refill.

He refused.

Security cameras showed her leaving angrily.

Investigators now believed the pills planted in my car came from her original prescription.

That evening, Vanessa was arrested on suspicion of evidence tampering and several related offenses.

Michael turned himself in shortly afterward.

His lawyer arranged it quietly.

I watched from across the street as he entered the police station.

He looked smaller than I remembered.

For fifteen years, Michael Bennett had controlled every room he entered.

That night, he walked through a police station door with his shoulders bent.

Noah stood beside me.

“Is Dad going to jail?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do you want him to?”

I looked at my son.

“I want him to tell the truth.”

Noah nodded.

Then my phone rang.

It was Patricia.

Her voice trembled.

“Claire, Michael isn’t the one you should be afraid of.”

I looked toward the station.

“Vanessa is under arrest.”

Patricia began crying.

“I’m not talking about Vanessa.”

My body went cold.

“Then who?”

May you like

Patricia whispered a name I never expected.

“Rebecca.”
