Chapter 17 - The Woman Who Was Never Trapped
Police traced the call to a rural highway two states away.
By the time officers reached the location, the phone was gone.
For hours, we heard nothing.
Then Michael asked to speak with me.
Daniel initially refused.
I agreed.
We met inside a police conference room with attorneys present.
Michael looked exhausted.
“Rebecca approached me first.”
I stared at him.
“What does that change?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why tell me?”
“Because she knew who I was.”
He explained that when Rebecca met him seven years earlier, she already knew about Bennett Development.
She knew about the family trust.
She knew Thomas Bennett had died.
At the time, Michael thought she was simply interested in wealthy families.
Years later, he discovered something else.
Rebecca’s father had once worked for Bennett Development.
His name was Robert Larkin.
Thomas Bennett fired him after accusing him of embezzlement.
Robert lost everything.
His marriage ended.
He later died by suicide.
Rebecca blamed the Bennetts.
“You think she started an affair with you for revenge?”
Michael nodded.
“At first.”
“And then?”
“I think it became complicated.”
I stared at him.
“You mean you fell in love with her.”
He looked down.
“Yes.”
The admission no longer hurt the way it once might have.
Too much had happened.
“Did Rebecca steal from my trust?”
Michael hesitated.
“Some transfers went through accounts she controlled.”
“Did you know?”
“Not all of them.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone stole from everyone.”
Michael’s eyes filled with tears.
“I destroyed our family.”
“Yes.”
“I know saying sorry means nothing.”
“It means less than nothing.”
He accepted that.
Then his phone records revealed Rebecca had contacted Vanessa repeatedly over the previous year.
The two women who supposedly hated each other had exchanged hundreds of calls.
They were not enemies.
Not originally.
They had been working together.
The theory emerged slowly.
Rebecca wanted revenge against the Bennett family.
Vanessa wanted money and control.
Together they exploited Michael’s affair, financial crimes, and fear.
But at some point their alliance fractured.
Ethan may have been the reason.
Rebecca wanted security for her son.
Vanessa saw every child connected to Michael as a threat to the trust.
Then police located Vanessa.
She stumbled into a roadside gas station shortly before dawn.
Bruised.
Terrified.
Alone.
Rebecca and Ethan were nowhere nearby.
Vanessa claimed Rebecca had kidnapped her.
Detectives were skeptical.
Then Vanessa told them Rebecca’s destination.
The Bennett family’s oldest undeveloped property.
A mountain lodge scheduled for demolition.
Why there?
Because according to Vanessa, Rebecca had hidden original financial records beneath the lodge years earlier.
Records proving Robert Larkin had never stolen from Bennett Development.
Thomas Bennett had blamed an innocent employee to conceal Michael’s first unauthorized transaction.
