Chapter 8 - Fifteen Years of Lies

The first fraud happened three months before our wedding.

Michael had been twenty-nine.

Ambitious.

Charming.

Desperate to prove he deserved his father’s company.

He secretly borrowed money against a development property he did not fully own.

When the project collapsed, he owed nearly $900,000.

My grandmother died that same year.

She left me $1.1 million.

Michael told me Bennett Development was facing a temporary cash crisis.

I gave him $850,000.

I believed I was investing in our future.

According to Vanessa, the money covered Michael’s illegal loan.

Everything afterward had been built on that secret.

I looked at Michael.

“Is she lying?”

He said nothing.

That silence had become his confession.

Vanessa continued.

“Dad found out.”

Patricia began crying again.

Michael’s father threatened to remove him from the company.

Then he suffered a fatal heart attack two weeks later.

No one accused Michael of causing it.

But his father died knowing his son had lied to everyone.

After the funeral, Michael rewrote the company ownership records.

He needed my investment to appear legitimate.

So he created documents showing I had received shares.

Then years later, he transferred those shares to Vanessa.

More forged signatures.

More hidden transactions.

More lies.

Daniel whispered.

“This could be much bigger than a custody case.”

Michael finally exploded.

“You think I wanted any of this?”

He stepped toward Vanessa.

“You blackmailed me.”

Vanessa laughed.

“I protected myself.”

“You were taking money.”

“So were you.”

Their argument became vicious.

Patricia begged them to stop.

I watched the family I had spent fifteen years trying to belong to tear itself apart.

Then Noah appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Dad.”

Everyone stopped.

Michael looked up.

Noah came downstairs slowly.

“I heard everything.”

Michael’s expression changed.

“Son.”

“Did you lie to Mom before you married her?”

Michael swallowed.

“It was complicated.”

“That means yes.”

“Noah.”

“Did you fake those recordings?”

Michael looked at me.

Noah raised his voice.

“Answer me.”

“Yes.”

The word destroyed something in my son’s face.

Michael stepped forward.

“I was scared.”

Noah backed away.

“You told me Mom was the liar.”

Michael froze.

I turned toward Noah.

“What?”

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“Dad said you had another family.”

My chest tightened.

“He said you were planning to leave us.”

Michael whispered.

“Noah.”

“He showed me pictures.”

“What pictures?”

Noah ran upstairs.

He returned carrying his tablet.

He opened a folder Michael had sent him.

Inside were photographs of me meeting a man at a hotel.

The angle made the meeting look intimate.

I stared at the images.

Then I recognized the man.

My attorney.

Michael had been building a case against me long before I knew I needed one.

But one photograph revealed something Michael had not noticed.

A reflection in the hotel window.

May you like

The photographer’s face.

Vanessa.
