Chapter 18 - The Lodge

Police reached the mountain lodge before sunrise.
Rebecca was inside with Ethan.
She had no weapon.
She had no hostages.
She had a metal case filled with documents.
And a can of gasoline.
I was not allowed near the property.
But investigators later told me what happened.
Rebecca stood inside the lodge while officers surrounded the building.
Ethan slept upstairs, unaware of the chaos.
Rebecca demanded one thing.
Michael Bennett had to come.
Police refused initially.
Michael insisted.
Eventually he was brought within speaking distance under supervision.
Rebecca opened the lodge door.
“You told me my father was guilty.”
Michael stood outside in the cold.
“I believed my father.”
“You knew.”
“Not then.”
“You found out later.”
Michael said nothing.
Rebecca shouted.
“You found his records.”
“Yes.”
“And you buried them.”
Michael closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Rebecca began crying.
Her father had spent the final years of his life believing he had destroyed his own family.
He had been innocent.
Thomas Bennett had blamed him to protect Michael’s unauthorized loan.
Michael discovered the truth after Thomas died.
Instead of correcting it, he hid the records.
Because admitting the truth would have exposed his first fraud.
Rebecca’s entire relationship with Michael had begun as revenge.
But then Ethan was born.
She tried to leave.
Vanessa would not let her.
Vanessa had learned enough about Robert Larkin to understand Rebecca’s motive.
So she blackmailed both of them.
Everyone had trapped everyone else.
Rebecca finally carried the metal case outside.
“I’m done protecting any of you.”
Police took possession of the records.
Ethan was brought safely out of the lodge.
Rebecca was detained for questioning but not immediately charged with kidnapping.
Evidence suggested Vanessa had voluntarily traveled with her before their confrontation became violent.
The truth would take months to untangle.
But the documents inside the metal case changed everything.
They proved systematic financial fraud inside Bennett Development dating back sixteen years.
They proved my ownership.
They proved Robert Larkin’s innocence.
They proved Vanessa’s theft.
And they proved Michael had knowingly concealed evidence.
Within forty-eight hours, Bennett Development’s board suspended Michael.
Banks froze several company accounts.
Investigators prepared new charges.
The empire Michael had spent his life protecting began collapsing.
I expected to feel satisfied.
Instead I felt exhausted.
Noah asked me one night.
“Are we poor now?”
I smiled sadly.
“No.”
“Are we rich?”
“I honestly don’t know.”
He thought about that.
“Do you care?”
I looked at Lily sleeping beside him.
“No.”
For the first time in years, money felt completely meaningless.
Then Daniel called.
The court had scheduled the custody hearing.
Michael had made a decision.
May you like
He would not fight me.
But he wanted to say something to the judge first.
