Chapter 3 - The Suitcases Upstairs

I asked Lily what else her father had told her.

She glanced nervously at Michael.

He stared at the table.

“Sweetheart.”

I kept my voice gentle.

“You are not in trouble.”

Lily swallowed.

“Daddy said you were sick.”

My chest tightened.

“He said you needed to rest for a long time.”

Noah turned toward Michael.

“You told her Mom was sick?”

Michael looked desperate.

“I was trying to make this easier.”

“For who?”

Noah’s voice cracked.

“For us, or for you?”

Michael stood.

“This conversation is over.”

I stood too.

“No, it isn’t.”

I looked at the restaurant manager standing nervously near the door.

“Please call security.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You’re calling security on your own husband?”

“I’m calling security because you assaulted me.”

Vanessa’s smile vanished.

Michael stepped between us.

“Claire, don’t make a scene.”

I stared at him.

“You let your sister slap me in front of my children.”

I pointed toward the fifty-seat private room he had rented for our anniversary.

“You created the scene.”

Guests from Michael’s company had already begun whispering.

Two of his business partners watched from a nearby table.

His mother looked like she might faint.

I gathered the documents.

“We’re going home.”

Michael blocked my path.

“The children stay with me.”

Noah immediately moved beside me.

Lily followed.

That was the first moment genuine fear entered Michael’s face.

“Kids.”

He forced a smile.

“Your mom is upset.”

Noah’s expression hardened.

“So am I.”

Security arrived moments later.

Vanessa insisted the slap had been provoked.

The manager informed her that several cameras had recorded the entire incident.

Vanessa went silent.

I took my children home.

Or at least I thought I was taking them home.

When we arrived at our house twenty minutes later, the front door stood open.

Every light upstairs was on.

I froze in the driveway.

Noah noticed first.

“Mom.”

Michael’s black SUV was not there.

But Vanessa’s second car was.

I called the police.

Then we waited outside.

Two officers arrived and entered the house.

When they returned, one officer asked whether anyone had been packing.

My stomach dropped.

We followed him upstairs.

Noah’s closet was half empty.

Lily’s favorite stuffed animals were gone.

Two large suitcases sat beside the hallway stairs.

Each had a luggage tag already attached.

DENVER.

I opened the first suitcase.

Inside were clothes, school records, birth certificates, and copies of both children’s passports.

Under Lily’s sweaters was a handwritten note.

It was from Michael.

Claire has become unpredictable.

If something happens tonight, take the kids directly to the airport.

Do not call her.

Do not tell her where you are going.

V.

I stared at the final letter.

Vanessa.

Then Noah opened the second suitcase.

Something fell onto the floor.

A small digital recorder.

I recognized it immediately.

It had been hidden inside the kitchen drawer for months.

I pressed play.

My own voice filled the hallway.

May you like

But the sentence had been edited.

And suddenly I understood exactly how Michael planned to prove I was dangerous.
