Chapter 14 - The Lake House Safe

The lake house stood at the end of a narrow private road.
It looked abandoned.
But the electricity was still connected.
Daniel called the detective before we entered.
Because ownership remained tied to Michael’s shell company, police arranged legal access after Michael’s attorney consented.
Inside, everything was covered in dust.
The master bedroom still contained Michael’s father’s old furniture.
Rebecca had described the safe accurately.
Beneath a loose section of flooring was a steel compartment.
Michael provided the combination through his attorney.
The door opened.
Inside were old corporate records.
Stock certificates.
Letters.
A handwritten will.
And one sealed folder carrying my maiden name.
CLAIRE HAWTHORNE.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
The first document was dated sixteen years earlier.
Before Michael and I married.
It was an agreement between my grandmother, Evelyn Hawthorne, and Michael’s father, Thomas Bennett.
They had jointly financed the first major expansion of Bennett Development.
My grandmother had invested far more money than Michael ever told me.
In exchange, she received a thirty-percent ownership interest.
Upon her death, that interest passed to me.
I stared at Daniel.
“I owned thirty percent of Bennett Development?”
“According to this, yes.”
I had never known.
Daniel turned another page.
Michael’s father had signed a personal acknowledgment confirming the arrangement.
Then we found something more explosive.
A letter from Thomas Bennett to Michael.
Michael.
Claire must be informed of Evelyn’s ownership after the wedding.
Her inheritance cannot be treated as company cash.
If she invests additional funds, her ownership increases accordingly.
Based on the later investment I made, Daniel estimated my legitimate ownership should have exceeded forty percent.
Instead, Michael forged records showing I held less than five.
Then he transferred even that portion to Vanessa.
The motive for the custody scheme became clear.
If I discovered the ownership fraud before divorce proceedings, Michael could lose control of the company.
Vanessa could lose everything she had taken.
But emergency custody would give them leverage.
They believed I would surrender financial claims in exchange for immediate access to Noah and Lily.
I felt sick.
“My children were bargaining chips.”
Daniel nodded grimly.
Then the detective found another envelope.
Inside was Thomas Bennett’s original will.
Patricia had always claimed the company passed entirely to Michael.
It did not.
Thomas divided voting control among Michael, Patricia, and a trust established for his grandchildren.
Noah and Lily.
That trust already owned fifteen percent.
Michael was not merely trying to take my children.
He needed control over their financial interest.
As temporary custodial parent, he planned to petition for authority over the children’s trust.
I whispered.
“That’s why they had to leave before sunrise.”
Daniel nodded.
“With the emergency custody order, he could claim immediate parental authority.”
The detective turned over the final document.
A handwritten note from Thomas.
Do not let Vanessa control the grandchildren’s trust.
Everyone in the room fell silent.
May you like
Because Thomas Bennett had died ten years before Noah’s trust became valuable.
Yet somehow he had known Vanessa might come for it.
