Chapter 11 - Rachel Is Alive

Claire and Thomas arrived twenty minutes later.
Adrian’s security searched the vehicle before allowing them near the cottage.
Claire stepped out first.
Sophie ran toward her.
“Mommy!”
Claire dropped to her knees.
She wrapped Sophie in both arms.
For several seconds, nothing else mattered.
Adrian watched from the porch.
Claire looked exhausted.
But she was alive.
Thomas exited the passenger side.
Daniel immediately restrained him.
Thomas did not resist.
Adrian approached.
“Give me one reason not to lock you in a room.”
Thomas looked toward Claire and Sophie.
“Because I can take you to Rachel.”
Margaret stood behind Adrian.
Thomas saw her.
His face changed.
“Margaret.”
She looked at him with open anger.
“You let Claire believe I was dead.”
Thomas responded quietly.
“You let Claire believe Rachel was dead.”
Nobody spoke.
Claire slowly stood.
“Enough.”
She took Sophie’s hand.
“I’m done learning my family history one lie at a time.”
Adrian understood the feeling.
“Inside.”
They gathered around the table.
Sophie sat beside Claire with her bunny.
Adrian considered sending her upstairs.
Claire stopped him.
“She knows enough to be afraid.”
“She deserves enough truth to feel safe.”
Adrian nodded.
They kept the darkest details vague.
Thomas began.
“Rachel discovered Vincent’s financial network twenty-seven years ago.”
“She copied records because she thought she could force him to stop.”
“Instead, Vincent tried to find the copies.”
“Eleanor found out.”
Marcus spoke.
“And helped Rachel.”
Thomas nodded.
“At first.”
Adrian noticed the qualifier.
“What changed?”
“Eleanor learned Rachel had recorded evidence involving Vincent’s closest partners.”
“Some of those partners could have destroyed Blackwood Industries.”
“Eleanor wanted the company protected.”
Adrian frowned.
“So my mother wasn’t trying to expose everything.”
“No.”
Thomas looked regretful.
“She wanted to expose Vincent while preserving the employees and innocent shareholders.”
Marcus nodded.
“That’s what I told you.”
Thomas continued.
“Rachel refused.”
“Why?”
“Because she believed partial truth becomes another kind of lie.”
Adrian looked toward the blackbird box.
“What happened next?”
“Rachel disappeared.”
“Eleanor believed Vincent killed her.”
“She created the final vault to protect Rachel’s archive.”
Margaret spoke.
“But Rachel survived.”
Thomas looked at her.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“You helped her.”
Margaret’s eyes widened.
“I did not.”
Thomas stared.
“Then who did?”
Everyone turned toward Marcus.
Marcus slowly stood.
“No.”
Adrian watched him.
“You faked your death.”
Marcus looked toward the lake.
“And?”
“You had resources.”
“You hated Vincent.”
“You knew Rachel.”
Marcus said nothing.
Claire whispered.
“You saved my mother.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The room changed.
Margaret looked stunned.
“Where has she been?”
“Canada.”
“Then Europe.”
“Then South America.”
“She changed names repeatedly.”
Claire’s voice shook.
“You knew my mother was alive my entire life?”
Marcus looked at her.
“I knew she survived.”
“I didn’t know where she was after the first few years.”
“Why didn’t she come back?”
“Because Vincent never stopped looking.”
Claire stood.
“So she abandoned me?”
“No.”
Marcus answered immediately.
“She stayed away because every time she moved closer to you, Vincent’s people moved closer too.”
Thomas looked at him.
“You could have told me.”
“You worked for Vincent.”
Thomas slammed a hand on the table.
“To keep Claire safe.”
Marcus laughed once.
“You spent twenty years serving the man who hunted her mother.”
Thomas stepped toward him.
Adrian moved between them.
“Not now.”
Claire looked at Adrian.
“The vault contains a locator.”
“What?”
“My mother’s last-resort contact route.”
“If the archive is opened correctly, it sends a message to Rachel.”
Adrian understood.
“That’s why Vincent wants it destroyed.”
Claire nodded.
“If Rachel knows he’s alive, she’ll release everything herself.”
Thomas added.
“She has the external copy.”
Adrian thought of Eleanor’s letter.
Two copies.
One beneath Blackwood Manor.
One held by someone she trusted.
Rachel.
“Then we don’t need the vault.”
Marcus shook his head.
“We do.”
“Why?”
“Because Rachel’s external copy is encrypted.”
“The vault holds the decryption sequence.”
Adrian looked around the table.
“Then we open it.”
Thomas hesitated.
“There’s a problem.”
“Of course there is.”
“The third authorization.”
“Claire.”
Thomas shook his head.
“Not just Claire.”
He looked toward Sophie.
Claire’s face went pale.
“No.”
Thomas continued.
“Rachel changed the system after Sophie was born.”
Adrian stared.
“You’re saying the third lock requires Sophie?”
Claire stood protectively in front of her daughter.
“Absolutely not.”
Thomas raised his hands.
“I agree.”
“Then how do you know?”
“Because I found a system update.”
“The lock needs two generations of Rachel’s bloodline.”
Claire looked furious.
“She used my daughter in a vault system?”
Thomas spoke gently.
“I don’t think she expected anyone to open it.”
Adrian looked at Sophie.
He would never place her in danger for information.
“We find another way.”
Marcus shook his head.
“There may not be one.”
“There is always another way.”
Vincent’s voice suddenly came from the hidden phone inside the bunny.
Everyone froze.
The device had activated remotely.
“Still optimistic, Adrian.”
Adrian grabbed it.
“Where are you?”
“Back home.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
Blackwood Manor.
Vincent continued.
“You left your house unattended.”
Daniel checked his radio.
“My team is still there.”
Vincent laughed softly.
“Not anymore.”
Adrian’s phone lit up with a security alert.
Every camera at Blackwood Manor came online at once.
The main foyer appeared.
Vincent stood beneath the chandelier.
Beside him were several armed men.
In his hand was the original BLACKWOOD CONTINGENCY folder Adrian had left in the library.
Vincent looked directly into the camera.
“Come home, son.”
May you like
Behind him, the red basement door slowly opened.
“And bring Claire.”
