Chapter 18 - The Last Twenty-One Minutes

The recording continued.
Eleanor struggled to speak.
Sirens sounded in the background.
Someone had placed the camera low beside her.
“I know I may not survive.”
Her voice was weak but clear.
“The crash was ordered by Luis Reyes.”
Daniel looked toward his father.
Luis closed his eyes.
“But Luis did not intend for me to die.”
Everyone froze.
Eleanor continued.
“He wanted to frighten me.”
“To stop me from meeting Rachel.”
Luis looked up.
“That’s true.”
Adrian listened.
“After the crash, Luis called emergency services.”
“He tried to save me.”
Daniel stared at his father.
Luis whispered.
“I did.”
Eleanor’s recording continued.
“But someone reached the ambulance before the hospital.”
Adrian leaned closer.
“I recognized the person.”
The video glitched.
Audio distorted.
Then Eleanor returned.
“If Adrian ever learns this, tell him I was not afraid.”
Adrian closed his eyes briefly.
“I was angry.”
“That part, he will understand.”
Despite everything, Adrian almost smiled.
Then Eleanor said:
“The person who entered the ambulance was Thomas Vale.”
Claire turned toward Thomas’s video feed.
Thomas went white.
“No.”
Eleanor continued.
“But Thomas did not harm me.”
Thomas exhaled.
“He tried to warn me.”
Adrian frowned.
The recording felt like one final maze.
Eleanor spoke.
“Thomas said Vincent’s physician was coming.”
Vincent’s expression changed.
Marcus looked at him.
“Dr. Halpern.”
Vincent looked away.
Adrian remembered the name.
Dr. Samuel Halpern had been the Blackwood family physician for decades.
He died twelve years earlier.
Eleanor continued.
“When Halpern arrived, Thomas tried to stop him.”
“He failed.”
Thomas’s eyes filled.
“I was twenty-three.”
“I didn’t know what to do.”
Claire looked at him.
“You were there?”
Thomas nodded.
“I followed the ambulance.”
“I thought I could protect her.”
Eleanor’s image flickered.
“If I die tonight, Samuel Halpern is responsible.”
Adrian looked at Vincent.
“Did you send him?”
Vincent said nothing.
“Did you?”
Vincent finally answered.
“Yes.”
The room fell silent.
Marcus stepped toward him.
“You said you didn’t order Eleanor’s death.”
“I didn’t.”
“You sent a doctor after her.”
“To recover the archive.”
Rachel’s voice turned cold.
“Samuel didn’t recover files.”
Vincent looked toward the speaker.
“He exceeded instructions.”
Adrian stared at his father.
“You sent a man you knew would do anything for you.”
“I told him to find out what Eleanor knew.”
“And she died.”
“Yes.”
“Then stop hiding behind wording.”
Vincent’s expression hardened.
Adrian continued.
“You created the conditions.”
“You gave the order.”
“You own the result.”
For the first time, Vincent had no answer.
The archive system beeped.
LEGAL DISTRIBUTION COMPLETE.
Evidence had been sent.
Not to the public.
To federal investigators, selected courts, and independent counsel.
Enough to begin.
Not enough to destroy innocent lives.
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“Call authorities.”
Daniel nodded.
“They’re already on the way.”
Vincent laughed softly.
“You think prison ends this?”
Adrian looked at him.
“No.”
“Truth does.”
Marcus opened the vault chamber.
Inside were shelves of drives, journals, tapes, and sealed records.
Rachel arrived minutes later.
She entered slowly.
Claire appeared by secure video from the mansion.
For the first time in decades, Rachel Carter saw the archive she had created.
“I thought it was gone.”
Marcus looked at her.
“I kept it alive.”
Rachel looked at him.
“You also lied to everyone.”
Marcus nodded.
“I did.”
Thomas spoke.
“We all did.”
Claire looked tired.
“Then maybe we stop.”
Adrian agreed.
“No more family secrets.”
Vincent laughed.
“You’ll change your mind.”
Nobody answered him.
Police vehicles approached the lake property.
Their lights moved through the trees.
Vincent looked toward the entrance.
For the first time, he seemed old.
Not powerful.
Not legendary.
Just old.
Adrian stood beside him.
Vincent spoke quietly.
“You hate me.”
Adrian considered it.
“No.”
Vincent looked surprised.
“I spent too many years organizing my life around you already.”
“You don’t get the rest.”
Officers entered.
They took Vincent into custody.
He did not resist.
At the doorway, he looked back.
“Adrian.”
Adrian met his eyes.
“You will eventually understand why I did everything.”
Adrian shook his head.
“That’s the difference between us.”
“I already understand.”
“I just don’t excuse it.”
Vincent was led away.
Dawn began touching the lake.
Claire arrived thirty minutes later with Sophie.
Sophie ran toward Adrian.
“Did you find Mommy?”
Adrian looked over her head toward Claire.
Claire smiled.
“Yes.”
He crouched.
“We found her.”
Sophie hugged her bunny.
“And the bad secret?”
Adrian looked toward the vault.
“That one too.”
She thought about it.
“Can we go home now?”
Adrian looked at Blackwood Manor in the distance.
Home.
The word no longer felt simple.
“Yes.”
May you like
He smiled faintly.
“But I think we’re going to change a few things first.”
