Chapter 16 - The Plan Nobody Shared
Adrian surrendered publicly.
Privately, he gave no one the full plan.
That was intentional.
Vincent had built his power by collecting information.
So Adrian gave him incomplete information from five different directions.
Claire would appear to cooperate.
Thomas would deliver the partial archive.
Marcus would take Vincent to the lake vault.
Daniel would pretend to turn against Adrian.
Luis would disappear.
And Rachel would remain where Vincent believed she was trapped.
Adrian’s real objective was simpler.
Get Sophie and Margaret safe.
Then expose everything.
Vincent gave them two hours.
Daniel pulled Adrian aside.
“My part depends on him believing I hate you.”
“Do you?”
Daniel almost smiled.
“Tonight?”
“A little.”
“Good.”
“What happens if my father interferes?”
“Let him.”
Daniel frowned.
“You trust him?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because Vincent doesn’t either.”
Daniel understood.
Claire approached.
“You didn’t tell me the whole plan.”
“No.”
“That’s irritating.”
“I know.”
“Is Sophie really safe?”
“Not yet.”
Claire’s expression tightened.
Adrian lowered his voice.
“Rachel gave us one advantage.”
“What?”
“She has been hiding from Vincent for twenty years.”
“She knows how he moves people.”
Claire nodded slowly.
Adrian had secretly contacted Rachel through the archive system while Vincent believed the screen was disabled.
Rachel knew the building where she was being held.
More importantly, she recognized the masked man watching Sophie.
His name was Peter Sloan.
A former Blackwood contractor.
He had one weakness.
He owed Thomas money.
Thomas called him.
The conversation lasted less than a minute.
Peter agreed to release Sophie if Thomas cleared the debt and provided a safe exit.
Vincent would never understand why loyalty could be purchased with mercy rather than fear.
At 2:13 a.m., Adrian’s phone vibrated.
One message.
SOPHIE SAFE.
He closed his eyes briefly.
Claire saw.
“Is she?”
“Yes.”
Her knees nearly weakened.
Adrian caught her arm.
“She’s with Margaret.”
Claire breathed again.
“Now Rachel.”
Adrian nodded.
The next step was dangerous.
Vincent expected Marcus and Adrian at the lake vault.
He expected Claire at Blackwood Manor.
He expected Daniel to betray Adrian.
Everything happened according to schedule.
Marcus drove Vincent toward Lake Warren.
Adrian followed in another vehicle.
Claire stayed at the mansion with Thomas.
Daniel disappeared.
Vincent seemed pleased.
At the boathouse, Vincent looked toward Adrian.
“You learned.”
“What?”
“Never keep everyone together.”
Adrian almost laughed.
“You taught me.”
They descended beneath the lake.
The flood system had reset.
The biometric scanners illuminated.
Vincent looked at Marcus.
“Authorize.”
Marcus placed his palm.
Accepted.
Adrian did the same.
Accepted.
THIRD AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
Vincent took out a tablet.
Claire appeared on video.
Beside her was Sophie.
Adrian’s heart stopped.
He looked at Vincent.
“You said she was safe.”
Vincent smiled.
“She is.”
Adrian looked closer.
Then he understood.
The feed was prerecorded.
Sophie wore the same clothing from earlier.
Vincent did not know she had escaped.
Good.
Vincent spoke into the tablet.
“Claire.”
The prerecorded image did not respond.
Vincent frowned.
Adrian watched carefully.
Then another feed appeared.
Live.
Claire stood in the hidden archive room at Blackwood Manor.
Thomas beside her.
“Claire.”
Vincent sounded annoyed.
“Bring Sophie to the scanner terminal.”
Claire looked directly into the camera.
“No.”
Vincent’s face hardened.
“Then your mother dies.”
Rachel appeared on another screen.
She was still imprisoned.
Claire’s expression changed.
Adrian spoke.
“Vincent.”
His father looked at him.
“You need Rachel’s bloodline.”
“Yes.”
“You have Rachel herself.”
Vincent froze.
Marcus understood.
Adrian continued.
“Why use Sophie?”
Vincent said nothing.
“You can open the vault with Rachel.”
Vincent’s jaw tightened.
Marcus looked toward him.
“You don’t have her.”
Adrian smiled.
“The video is old.”
Vincent reached for his remote.
Nothing happened.
Adrian’s phone rang.
Daniel.
“We have Rachel.”
Vincent stared.
Adrian answered on speaker.
“You sure?”
Rachel’s voice came through.
“I’m sure.”
Vincent’s expression changed for the first time all night.
Real fear.
Rachel spoke.
“Hello, Vincent.”
He looked toward the speaker.
“You.”
Rachel’s voice was calm.
“You spent twenty years building systems to stop me.”
“And you still made the same mistake.”
Vincent whispered.
“What mistake?”
“You assumed fear makes people predictable.”
Adrian looked at his father.
“That’s the lesson.”
Marcus stepped away from the scanner.
Vincent suddenly reached inside his jacket.
Adrian moved first.
He struck Vincent’s wrist.
A small weapon fell onto the floor.
Marcus kicked it away.
Vincent fought harder than Adrian expected.
But he was older.
Adrian pinned him against the steel wall.
“You’re done.”
Vincent laughed.
“No.”
“You think this ends with me?”
He looked toward the vault.
“Open it.”
Adrian shook his head.
Vincent smiled.
“You already did.”
A warning appeared.
EXTERNAL ARCHIVE RELEASE INITIATED.
Adrian stared.
Marcus went pale.
“That’s impossible.”
Vincent laughed.
“Rachel’s connection triggered it.”
A countdown appeared.
10 MINUTES UNTIL PUBLIC RELEASE.
Rachel heard through the phone.
“No.”
Adrian looked at the screen.
“What happens in ten minutes?”
Rachel answered.
“Everything goes public.”
Adrian almost smiled.
“That’s what we wanted.”
Rachel’s voice became urgent.
“No.”
“The raw archive includes names of protected witnesses.”
“Children.”
“Families.”
“People who will be endangered.”
Vincent smiled from the floor.
“You wanted truth.”
“Now you get all of it.”
Adrian looked at the countdown.
