Chapter 6 - The Second Key

Adrian carried the bunny to the library table.

Daniel watched as he carefully opened the torn seam.

A second key fell onto the wood.

This one was smaller than the silver basement key.

It was made of dark brass.

A tiny symbol had been engraved into the head.

A blackbird.

Adrian recognized it.

His mother used to draw the same bird inside the covers of her books.

When he was a child, Eleanor told him it meant freedom.

“What does it open?”

Daniel asked.

Adrian shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

He searched the bunny again.

Inside the stuffing was a folded strip of paper.

One line was written in Claire’s handwriting.

THE BIRD RETURNS TO WATER.

Adrian read it twice.

Daniel looked toward him.

“Lake?”

“The cottage.”

Adrian checked the clock.

Twenty minutes had passed since Sophie disappeared.

He hated every second.

“We leave now.”

Daniel stepped in front of him.

“The note said alone.”

“I’m not leaving my security behind.”

“Then they may see us coming.”

Adrian thought quickly.

“You take the main road.”

“I’ll use the old forestry route.”

Daniel frowned.

“You’re still going in alone.”

“I’m going in first.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

“It’s close enough.”

Adrian took the archive folder, the brass key, and his phone.

He also removed his jacket.

The tailored suit beneath concealed a protective vest Daniel insisted he wear.

They left Blackwood Manor through separate exits.

The drive to Lake Warren took twenty-five minutes.

Adrian made it in eighteen.

The old cottage appeared through the trees.

It looked exactly as he remembered.

Gray cedar walls.

Stone chimney.

Wraparound porch.

Lake water visible through tall pines.

No lights were on.

Adrian parked half a mile away and approached on foot.

His phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

COME INSIDE.

He did not respond.

The front door opened before he reached it.

Margaret stood there.

Adrian immediately raised his weapon.

“Where is Sophie?”

“She’s safe.”

“Move.”

Margaret lifted both hands.

“Adrian, listen.”

“Where is she?”

“Upstairs.”

“Move.”

Margaret stepped aside.

Adrian entered.

The cottage smelled of dust and cedar.

Then small footsteps came from the staircase.

“Mr. Adrian!”

Sophie appeared.

Adrian lowered the weapon instantly.

She ran toward him.

He caught her with one arm.

“Are you okay?”

She nodded.

“Grandma said we had to leave.”

Adrian looked at Margaret.

“You attacked my officers.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

“I found Sophie in the service corridor.”

Adrian stared.

“She was alone.”

Sophie nodded.

“A man told me Grandma was waiting.”

“What man?”

“I don’t know.”

Margaret spoke.

“When I reached the safe room, the guards were already down.”

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“Because someone sent me the same message you got.”

Margaret handed him her phone.

The message read:

TAKE SOPHIE TO THE LAKE COTTAGE OR CLAIRE DIES.

Adrian looked up.

“You should have told me.”

“And risked Claire?”

“You kidnapped a four-year-old.”

“I saved her from whoever was inside your house.”

Adrian wanted to argue.

Then he remembered the tracker inside the bunny.

Someone had known Sophie’s location.

“Where’s Vincent?”

Margaret’s face changed.

“He’s not here.”

“Then who sent the note?”

“I don’t know.”

Adrian took out the brass key.

Margaret stared at it.

“Where did you get that?”

“Inside Sophie’s bunny.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Claire found it.”

“What does it open?”

Margaret looked toward the fireplace.

Behind it hung an old painting of Lake Warren.

She walked over and lifted the frame.

A small keyhole was hidden in the wall.

Adrian inserted the brass key.

A mechanism clicked.

Part of the wall moved inward.

Inside was a narrow compartment.

Sophie stepped closer.

Adrian kept her behind him.

A metal box sat inside.

The same blackbird symbol was stamped on its lid.

Adrian lifted it onto the table.

The brass key opened the box.

Inside were three objects.

A cassette tape.

An old passport.

And a handwritten letter addressed to Adrian.

He picked up the passport first.

The photograph showed Vincent Blackwood.

But the name was different.

Victor Hale.

Issued eight years earlier.

The year Vincent supposedly died.

Margaret whispered.

“He planned it.”

Adrian opened the letter.

His mother’s handwriting covered the first page.

Adrian,

If you are reading this, then every person I hoped would protect you has failed.

He swallowed.

Sophie quietly sat beside Margaret.

Adrian continued.

Your father discovered the contingency archive.

He believes I created it to destroy him.

That is not true.

I created it to protect you.

Adrian turned the page.

There are two copies.

One is hidden beneath Blackwood Manor.

The other is held by someone I trust.

Never allow Vincent to possess both.

Never trust Thomas completely.

Never trust Margaret completely.

Never trust Marcus at all.

Adrian looked up.

Margaret had gone pale.

“You knew about this letter?”

“No.”

Adrian continued.

And if Vincent ever asks you to open the final vault, refuse.

The vault does not contain money.

It contains proof of who ordered my death.

A sound came from outside.

A branch snapped.

Adrian immediately moved toward the window.

Nothing.

Then the porch light turned on.

It had not worked in twenty years.

Margaret whispered.

“Someone is here.”

Adrian took Sophie’s hand.

“Upstairs.”

Margaret moved with her.

Before they reached the staircase, a voice came through an old wall speaker.

“Adrian.”

He froze.

Vincent.

His father’s voice filled the cottage.

“You always were too curious.”

Adrian looked around.

“Where are you?”

Vincent chuckled.

“Closer than you think.”

The lights suddenly came on throughout the cottage.

Adrian saw a small camera mounted above the fireplace.

Vincent continued.

“You found your mother’s letter.”

Adrian stared directly into the camera.

“You took Claire.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

A pause.

“Claire came to me.”

Adrian felt his anger falter.

“Why?”

“Because she learned the truth.”

“What truth?”

Vincent’s voice became almost gentle.

“That Thomas Vale is her father.”

Margaret made a small sound behind Adrian.

He turned.

Her face confirmed it.

Sophie looked between the adults.

Adrian slowly faced the camera again.

“Where is Claire?”

Vincent answered.

“With Thomas.”

A loud vehicle engine sounded outside.

Headlights swept across the windows.

May you like

Vincent spoke one final sentence.

“And now Marcus is coming for all of you.”
