Chapter 2 - Behind the Red Door

Adrian stepped through the doorway first.

Sophie remained behind him, clutching his jacket with one hand and her bunny with the other.

The hidden corridor looked nothing like the old basement Adrian remembered.

Fresh concrete covered the walls.

Bright ceiling lights stretched into the distance.

Electrical cables ran through steel conduits.

Someone had spent serious money rebuilding this section of Blackwood Manor without his knowledge.

That fact angered Adrian almost as much as Claire’s disappearance.

He raised one finger to his lips.

Sophie nodded.

“Claire?”

His voice traveled through the corridor.

No answer came.

Adrian took several more steps.

The passage ended at a security door with a glass panel.

Beyond it was a room filled with monitors.

Most screens were black.

One showed the mansion driveway.

Another showed the main kitchen.

A third showed Sophie’s bedroom.

Adrian’s face hardened.

Someone had been watching the child.

He turned Sophie away from the monitors.

“Stay close.”

On the desk were printed photographs.

Adrian picked up the first one.

Claire entering the library.

Another showed her speaking to a delivery driver.

Another showed her walking beside Adrian at a charity event.

The dates stretched back almost a year.

Someone had been following her long before she disappeared.

Then Adrian saw his own photographs.

Dozens of them.

Business meetings.

Restaurants.

Airports.

Private family gatherings.

A folder sat beside the photographs.

BLACKWOOD CONTINGENCY.

Adrian opened it.

Inside were copies of company documents.

Bank transfers.

Property records.

Access codes.

Several signatures looked like his.

They were not.

Someone had been forging his authorization.

Sophie suddenly pointed.

“Mommy.”

Adrian turned.

A small video monitor in the corner had flickered to life.

Claire appeared on screen.

She sat in a plain room.

Her hair was messy.

Her face was tired.

But she was alive.

Adrian rushed toward the monitor.

“Claire.”

The image was recorded.

A timestamp showed it had been made six days earlier.

Claire looked directly into the camera.

“If Adrian sees this, Thomas knows you opened the door.”

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

Claire continued.

“You cannot trust anyone who tells you this is about money.”

She looked toward something off-camera.

“This started before you inherited Blackwood Industries.”

The recording jumped.

Claire appeared again.

“The red room belonged to your father.”

Adrian stared at the screen.

His father, Vincent Blackwood, had died eight years earlier.

Vincent had been powerful, demanding, and secretive.

He had built Blackwood Industries into a billion-dollar empire.

Adrian had spent most of his adult life trying to make the company more transparent than his father ever had.

Claire’s next sentence made that effort suddenly feel meaningless.

“Your father kept records here that could destroy people.”

The screen flickered.

Claire leaned closer.

“I found them accidentally.”

Her voice lowered.

“Thomas found out.”

The video ended.

Adrian hit the keyboard.

Nothing happened.

The system required a password.

He searched the desk.

Sophie wandered two steps toward another table.

“Mr. Adrian?”

He turned.

She held a small photograph.

Adrian took it.

It showed Claire standing beside an older woman.

Adrian recognized the woman immediately.

His mother.

Eleanor Blackwood.

The photograph should not have existed.

Eleanor had died when Adrian was nine.

Claire would have been barely six years old at the time.

Yet there she was.

A little girl standing beside Eleanor outside Blackwood Manor.

Adrian looked at Sophie.

“Where did you find this?”

She pointed toward an open drawer.

Adrian searched it.

More photographs appeared.

Eleanor with Claire’s mother.

Eleanor with Thomas Vale as a young man.

Eleanor standing beside Adrian’s father.

One photograph had a message written on the back.

If anything happens to me, find Margaret Carter.

Adrian read it twice.

Margaret Carter.

Claire’s mother.

Claire had told Adrian her mother died years earlier.

Had Eleanor known Claire’s family?

His phone rang.

Thomas Vale.

Adrian answered.

“Where is she?”

Thomas did not respond immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice was calm.

“You should have listened.”

Adrian walked away from Sophie.

“Claire is alive.”

“For now.”

Adrian’s hand tightened around the phone.

“If you hurt her—”

“Stop pretending you understand what’s happening.”

Thomas sounded almost tired.

“This house was built on secrets you were never meant to inherit.”

“I inherited everything.”

“No.”

Thomas laughed softly.

“You inherited the company.”

His voice changed.

“The truth belonged to Claire.”

Adrian looked toward the photograph of Eleanor and young Claire.

“What does Claire have to do with my mother?”

Silence.

Then Thomas said something Adrian did not expect.

“Ask Claire who her father was.”

The call disconnected.

Adrian stared at the phone.

Sophie had moved toward the monitor again.

Suddenly another screen turned on.

Live video.

Claire was standing in a dark room.

Someone had placed a camera above her.

She looked exhausted but alert.

Then Claire raised her head.

“Adrian?”

He moved closer.

“Claire, can you hear me?”

“Yes.”

Her voice came through the speakers.

Relief hit him so strongly he had to steady himself against the desk.

“Where are you?”

“I don’t know.”

“Are you hurt?”

“I’m okay.”

She looked around nervously.

“Listen to me.”

Adrian leaned toward the screen.

“Thomas is moving everything tonight.”

“What?”

“The files.”

Claire swallowed.

“He thinks you found the room.”

Adrian looked at the documents scattered across the desk.

“What files?”

“The ones your father buried.”

“Claire, tell me where you are.”

“I can’t.”

The feed began breaking apart.

“Claire.”

She leaned toward the camera.

“Adrian, Sophie cannot stay in that house.”

He looked at the little girl.

“Why?”

Claire’s eyes filled with fear.

“Because Thomas isn’t the person who scares me most.”

The video froze.

Adrian stared at her frozen face.

Then every light in the hidden corridor went out.

Somewhere behind them, the red door slammed shut.
