Chapter 17 - Nine Minutes

Adrian forced Vincent into a chair.

Marcus watched the countdown.

Eight minutes and forty seconds.

Rachel spoke through Daniel’s phone.

“There’s a manual filter.”

“Where?”

“In the lake vault.”

Adrian stared at the sealed door.

“We still need third authorization.”

Rachel answered.

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

“There’s no other way.”

“How far are you?”

“Seven minutes.”

Adrian looked at the countdown.

“Too late.”

Claire came through another line.

“Maybe not.”

Adrian switched calls.

“What?”

“I found the mirror system.”

“The what?”

“Rachel built duplicate control terminals.”

“One at the lake.”

“One behind Eleanor’s portrait.”

Rachel heard.

“I forgot about that.”

Claire almost laughed.

“You designed it.”

“Twenty-five years ago.”

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“What does Claire need?”

Rachel answered.

“Three authorization phrases.”

“Blackwood.”

“Carter.”

“Witness.”

Adrian frowned.

“Witness?”

“The archive only releases when a neutral third party confirms.”

“Who counts?”

Rachel paused.

“Someone who is neither Blackwood nor Carter.”

Everyone looked at Vincent.

Then Marcus.

Thomas’s voice came through Claire’s connection.

“I can do it.”

Rachel responded.

“No.”

“You’re Claire’s biological father.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

Daniel spoke.

“I can.”

Rachel hesitated.

“You are Reyes.”

“Yes.”

Rachel went quiet.

Then said:

“Luis Reyes was part of the original system.”

“His family may be excluded.”

Daniel laughed without humor.

“Of course.”

Adrian looked at Vincent.

“Who did Eleanor trust as witness?”

Vincent said nothing.

Marcus spoke.

“The estate attorney.”

“Henry Shaw.”

Adrian frowned.

“Henry died ten years ago.”

Vincent smiled.

“Another dead man.”

Adrian stared.

“Don’t.”

Vincent chuckled.

“He is actually dead.”

Nobody appreciated the joke.

Claire searched the archive terminal.

“There’s a list of authorized witnesses.”

She read names.

Most were dead.

Then she stopped.

“One is alive.”

“Who?”

Claire looked surprised.

“Margaret Carter.”

Rachel responded.

“Margaret isn’t a Carter by blood.”

Adrian understood.

“She can authorize.”

Claire immediately called Margaret.

Sophie answered.

“Hello?”

Claire almost cried from relief.

“Baby, put Grandma on.”

Margaret came to the phone.

Claire explained quickly.

Margaret was confused.

“You want me to say a phrase?”

Rachel gave instructions.

“Stand near the blackbird terminal at the secure house.”

Margaret looked around.

“There is no terminal.”

Rachel froze.

“Then Vincent moved you outside the system.”

Adrian checked the countdown.

Six minutes.

Marcus paced.

“Could we disconnect power?”

Rachel answered.

“No.”

“The archive has independent batteries.”

“Destroy the servers?”

“The lake vault is armored.”

Vincent leaned back.

“You are all very entertaining.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You know how to stop it.”

Vincent smiled.

“Yes.”

“What do you want?”

“My freedom.”

Marcus laughed.

“No.”

Adrian ignored him.

“If I let you walk, you stop the release?”

“Yes.”

Rachel shouted through the phone.

“He’s lying.”

Vincent looked toward the speaker.

“Am I?”

Rachel responded.

“You never built the cancellation route.”

Vincent’s expression shifted slightly.

Adrian saw it.

Rachel was right.

Five minutes.

Claire suddenly spoke.

“I found something.”

“What?”

“Eleanor added a final witness.”

“Name?”

Claire hesitated.

“Adrian Blackwood.”

Adrian frowned.

“I’m already the Blackwood authorization.”

Rachel understood.

“She separated identity from role.”

“What does that mean?”

“You can authorize twice.”

“As heir.”

“And as witness.”

Marcus shook his head.

“That violates the trust separation.”

Rachel answered.

“Unless Eleanor changed it after my disappearance.”

Adrian looked at the scanner.

A new option appeared.

WITNESS OVERRIDE.

He selected it.

VOICE PHRASE REQUIRED.

Adrian looked toward Rachel.

“What phrase?”

“I don’t know.”

Marcus thought.

“Eleanor’s bedtime phrase.”

Adrian shook his head.

“That opened the archive room.”

Claire spoke.

“Maybe another one.”

Sophie’s voice came faintly through Margaret’s phone.

“Blackbirds always come home.”

Adrian froze.

That phrase.

Not find home.

Come home.

He had remembered it wrong earlier.

Eleanor’s recording had accepted the approximate phrase for the first lock.

Maybe the exact version mattered now.

Adrian faced the scanner.

“Blackbirds always come home.”

WITNESS OVERRIDE ACCEPTED.

Everyone stopped.

A new menu appeared.

FILTER PUBLIC RELEASE.

PROTECTED IDENTITIES.

MINORS.

ACTIVE WITNESSES.

NON-COMPLICIT EMPLOYEES.

Adrian selected all four.

Rachel exhaled.

“Good.”

Three minutes.

The system processed.

Vincent’s confidence faded.

Adrian looked at him.

“You wanted chaos.”

Vincent said nothing.

“You thought truth had to be destructive.”

“Truth is destructive.”

“No.”

Adrian selected FINALIZE.

“People are.”

The countdown stopped.

PUBLIC RELEASE FILTERED.

LEGAL AUTHORITIES NOTIFIED.

PROTECTED IDENTITIES SEALED.

Rachel laughed through the phone.

Claire cried quietly.

Marcus leaned against the wall.

Vincent stared at the screen.

“You ruined everything.”

Adrian looked at him.

“No.”

“I ended what you built.”

Vincent slowly smiled.

“Not yet.”

Adrian frowned.

Vincent looked toward the vault door.

“You still haven’t seen the final recording.”

A new file appeared on the screen.

ELEANOR BLACKWOOD - FINAL MESSAGE.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Rachel whispered.

“She recorded something after the crash?”

Marcus shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

The timestamp showed twenty-one minutes after the official time of Eleanor’s death.

Adrian selected PLAY.

His mother appeared.

Her face was pale.

She was inside an ambulance.

But alive.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Adrian.”

“If you ever see this, then someone lied about when I died.”

Everyone turned slowly toward Luis’s connection.

Daniel looked at his father.

Luis lowered his head.

Eleanor continued.

“The crash did not kill me.”

Adrian felt the air leave his lungs.

May you like

Her final sentence played.

“The person who finished it was someone I trusted enough to let inside the ambulance.”
