Chapter 1 - The Gun on the Marble Floor

The handgun stopped sliding three feet from Olivia Bennett’s champagne-colored heels.
For one impossible second, nobody moved.
The crystal chandelier above them burned with warm golden light, making the polished marble floor shine like glass.
Mason Reed stood near the doorway with one hand still extended from where the weapon had slipped from his grip.
Derek Vaughn remained beside Olivia.
His fingers were wrapped tightly around her hand.
The broken wine glass glittered between the two men.
Olivia could hear her own breathing.
She could hear the distant music from the main club beyond the private lounge.
She could even hear the faint hum of the ventilation system.
Everything else had gone silent.
Derek followed her gaze toward the gun.
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Olivia knew him well enough to understand what that tiny movement meant.
He had realized she was thinking about reaching for it.
“Olivia.”
His voice was quiet.
That frightened her more than shouting ever could.
She lifted her eyes.
Derek gave her the same calm smile he had worn at charity dinners, private parties, and business events where everyone believed he was charming.
“Look at me.”
Olivia forced herself to meet his eyes.
Mason shifted near the doorway.
Derek immediately turned toward him.
“Don’t.”
Mason stopped.
His jaw tightened.
“Let her go.”
Derek almost laughed.
“You walked into my room carrying a gun, Mason.”
“You know why I came.”
“I know what you think happened.”
Olivia’s stomach tightened.
Mason looked at her.
That was all it took.
Derek noticed.
He always noticed everything.
His hand tightened around Olivia’s fingers.
Pain shot through her knuckles.
She refused to react.
For the past six months, she had learned that reacting gave Derek something to study.
Something to use later.
She looked back at the handgun.
It seemed impossibly close.
Derek leaned toward her.
“Don’t embarrass yourself.”
Olivia whispered, “I want to leave.”
Derek’s smile disappeared.
Mason heard her clearly.
“So let her leave.”
Derek’s attention returned to him.
“You still believe this is about romance?”
Mason said nothing.
Derek nodded toward Olivia.
“She hasn’t told you the truth.”
Olivia felt the blood drain from her face.
Mason noticed.
“What truth?”
Derek looked pleased.
That was when Olivia understood the real danger.
Derek had never planned to simply keep her in the lounge.
He had planned this confrontation.
He wanted Mason here.
He wanted both of them frightened.
He wanted control of the story.
Olivia finally pulled her hand free.
Derek looked down at his empty fingers.
The room changed.
Mason immediately stepped forward.
Olivia moved toward the gun.
Derek moved faster.
His shoe kicked it beneath a black marble table.
Mason lunged.
Derek grabbed Olivia around the waist and dragged her backward.
She screamed.
“Run, Mason!”
Derek shoved her behind him.
Mason drove his shoulder into Derek.
Both men crashed against a glass table.
A bottle fell and shattered.
Olivia stumbled toward the doorway.
She was almost there.
Two steps.
Then one.
The doors suddenly slammed shut.
Olivia froze.
A magnetic lock clicked.
Mason stared at the door.
Derek slowly straightened his jacket.
Blood showed at the corner of his mouth.
But he was smiling again.
“You really thought I’d leave the exit unlocked?”
Olivia turned.
Derek reached into his jacket.
Mason instinctively moved in front of her.
Derek pulled out a black smartphone.
Not another weapon.
A phone.
He tapped the screen.
The giant television mounted on the far wall came alive.
A security recording appeared.
Olivia recognized the hallway immediately.
Her apartment building.
Her heart stopped.
The video showed her entering her apartment three nights earlier.
Then Mason appeared five minutes later.
Mason stared at the screen.
“What is this?”
Derek replied calmly.
“Insurance.”
The recording continued.
Mason entered Olivia’s apartment.
Then another figure stepped into frame.
Olivia leaned forward.
She had never seen the person before.
A man wearing a baseball cap followed Mason inside.
The timestamp jumped forward.
The stranger came back out alone.
He carried Mason’s black duffel bag.
Mason whispered, “That’s impossible.”
Derek looked at Olivia.
“Ask him what was in the bag.”
She turned toward Mason.
His expression terrified her.
Not because he looked guilty.
Because he looked confused.
“What was in it?”
Mason shook his head.
“Nothing.”
Derek laughed.
“Mason.”
Mason stared at the screen.
“That isn’t my bag.”
Olivia looked between them.
Derek tapped the screen again.
A photograph appeared.
Inside the bag were stacks of cash, several passports, and a flash drive.
Olivia recognized the flash drive instantly.
It was silver.
A tiny scratch crossed one corner.
She had seen it before.
Derek kept it inside the locked drawer in his home office.
Months earlier, she had watched him hide it after receiving a late-night phone call.
Derek saw recognition on her face.
“There it is.”
Mason turned to her.
“You know that drive?”
Olivia hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Derek stepped closer.
“That little piece of metal is why she can’t leave.”
Mason looked at Olivia.
“What’s on it?”
Derek answered for her.
“Enough to destroy several very important people.”
Olivia swallowed.
She had never known what the files contained.
But she had copied the drive two weeks ago.
And Derek did not know.
At least she had believed he did not know.
Derek tilted his head.
“You thought I wouldn’t notice, Olivia?”
Her chest tightened.
Mason slowly turned toward her.
“You copied it?”
Olivia said nothing.
Derek smiled.
“She did.”
Mason’s eyes widened.
Derek continued.
“And now the copy is missing.”
He walked toward the table.
He bent down and picked up Mason’s gun.
Then he removed the magazine and placed both pieces on opposite sides of the room.
His movements were controlled.
Deliberate.
Humiliating.
“This stopped being a rescue the moment Mason walked through that door.”
Olivia stared at him.
“What do you want?”
Derek looked at her.
“The copy.”
“I don’t have it.”
“I know.”
His answer made her blood run cold.
Derek turned toward Mason.
“He does.”
Mason stared at him.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Derek walked closer.
“You will.”
A phone vibrated.
Not Derek’s.
Not Olivia’s.
Mason slowly reached into his trench coat.
He pulled out his phone.
One new message waited on the screen.
The sender was unknown.
Mason opened it.
His face changed.
Olivia stepped closer.
The message contained only six words.
DON’T TRUST HER.
CHECK YOUR COAT.
Mason stared at Olivia.
Then he reached into the inside pocket of his trench coat.
His fingers touched something.
He pulled out a small silver flash drive.
Olivia stopped breathing.
May you like
It was the copy.
And she had never put it there.
