Chapter 16 - The Deal Adrian Offered

The pounding stopped.

Everyone listened.

Adrian held the phone to his ear.

“Yes.”

He paced.

“No, I won’t bring Daniel outside.”

Pause.

“I said I’ll terminate the claim.”

Daniel whispered to Olivia, “Can he?”

She shook her head.

Samuel heard.

“No.”

Daniel relaxed slightly.

Adrian continued.

“You want control restored?”

He looked at Derek.

Derek stared back.

“Then clear the church.”

Another pause.

Adrian smiled.

“Because if you don’t, I release Evelyn Bennett’s archive.”

Grace mouthed, Good.

The voice on the other end was too faint to hear.

Adrian ended the call.

Mason asked, “Well?”

“They’re leaving.”

Nobody believed him.

Then engines started outside.

One by one, vehicles drove away.

Grace checked through a basement window.

“They’re actually going.”

Derek looked at Adrian.

“What did you offer?”

Adrian said nothing.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did you offer?”

Adrian looked at him.

“My vote.”

Derek frowned.

“You don’t have enough.”

“Combined with Father’s proxy, I do.”

Samuel looked up from the laptop.

“You still control your father’s proxy?”

Adrian nodded.

Derek laughed.

“Of course.”

Olivia asked, “What does your vote do?”

Samuel answered.

“If Adrian backs the board’s emergency transfer, Daniel’s claim becomes harder to enforce.”

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“So you promised to help them.”

“I promised nothing.”

“You said you’d vote.”

“I lied.”

Daniel stared.

Adrian shrugged.

“You should try it sometime.”

Olivia almost laughed.

Daniel did not.

Grace checked the road.

“Temporary solution.”

Samuel looked at the secure court connection.

“Judge moved us to 6:40.”

Twenty minutes.

Thomas sat against the wall.

He looked exhausted.

Olivia joined him.

“Dad.”

He looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

“For which lie?”

He smiled sadly.

“Pick one.”

She sat beside him.

“Why didn’t you tell me about Daniel?”

“Your mother wanted you to have a normal life.”

“I didn’t.”

“I know.”

“You should have told me when I became an adult.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Fear became habit.”

Olivia understood that more than she wanted to.

Thomas continued.

“After Evelyn died, every time I thought about telling you, I imagined Adrian appearing.”

“He appeared anyway.”

“Yes.”

Olivia looked across the basement.

Daniel was talking with Samuel.

He moved like her mother.

She could see it now.

The way he used his hands.

The way he looked down when thinking.

She felt grief for years they never had.

Derek approached.

Thomas immediately stiffened.

Olivia said, “It’s fine.”

Derek stopped several feet away.

“I need to tell you something before court.”

Olivia sighed.

“Another secret?”

“Yes.”

“Of course.”

Derek looked at Thomas.

“You may want to hear it.”

Thomas stood.

“What?”

Derek took out his phone.

He opened an old encrypted file.

A video.

The timestamp was the night Olivia’s mother died.

Olivia stopped breathing.

“Where did you get that?”

“My father’s archive.”

The video showed a highway toll camera.

Evelyn’s car passed.

Thirty seconds later, another vehicle followed.

Adrian’s?

No.

Derek paused and zoomed.

The driver was Daniel Vale.

His uncle.

Thomas stared.

“No.”

Derek continued the video.

A third car followed.

Nora whispered from behind them.

“That’s federal.”

Grace approached.

The vehicle was an unmarked government sedan.

Thomas looked at Derek.

“Who was driving?”

Derek opened another photograph.

A man.

Older.

Gray hair.

Olivia did not recognize him.

Nora did.

“My former supervisor.”

Grace stared.

“The one who killed your investigation?”

“Yes.”

Derek nodded.

“He was following Evelyn twelve years before your investigation.”

Nora’s face hardened.

“He was involved from the beginning.”

Samuel called out.

“Five minutes.”

Olivia looked at the video.

“So who caused the crash?”

Derek shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Thomas whispered, “Daniel Vale.”

Derek looked at him.

“Why?”

Thomas’s face changed.

“Because Evelyn was going to expose him too.”

Everyone stared.

Olivia said, “You told me he helped her.”

“He did.”

“At first.”

Thomas nodded.

“Then?”

“He started selling information.”

“To who?”

“Everyone.”

Adrian approached.

“My uncle.”

Derek nodded.

“He played both sides.”

Nora looked at the video.

“And federal agents.”

Grace whispered, “So the archive doesn’t just expose Vaughn Strategic.”

Olivia understood.

“It exposes the people who were supposed to stop them.”

That explained the desperation.

The board.

Nora’s supervisor.

The fake police.

The sealed cases.

The archive threatened more than a criminal company.

It threatened institutions.

Samuel’s laptop chimed.

“The judge is ready.”

Everyone gathered.

Daniel sat before the camera.

Samuel beside him.

The judge appeared.

Older woman.

Serious expression.

“This is an emergency petition regarding the Vaughn Family Control Trust.”

Samuel began.

He introduced Daniel.

Presented the birth certificate.

The journal.

DNA evidence from a test Caleb had arranged.

Adrian watched from the corner.

Derek stood beside Olivia.

The judge asked Daniel several questions.

Then she turned.

“Mr. Adrian Vaughn.”

Adrian stepped into frame.

“Are you Daniel Hale’s biological father?”

Silence.

The question hung.

Adrian looked at his son.

Daniel stared back.

Adrian answered.

“Yes.”

The judge continued.

“Do you contest his identity?”

Adrian could end everything.

He could deny.

Delay.

Destroy the claim.

Olivia watched his face.

Adrian looked at the screen.

Then at Daniel.

“No.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

The judge nodded.

“Identity provisionally recognized.”

Samuel exhaled.

The judge continued.

“Control transfer is stayed pending evidentiary review.”

Grace smiled.

Mason whispered, “We did it.”

Then the judge added.

“However, this court has received a competing emergency petition.”

Samuel frowned.

“From whom?”

The judge looked down.

“Daniel Vale.”

Everyone froze.

Derek whispered, “He’s alive.”

The judge continued.

“Mr. Vale claims the entire trust is fraudulent and asserts ownership based on an earlier family agreement.”

Adrian stared.

Thomas looked terrified.

Olivia understood.

The third brother.

The hidden uncle.

The man who followed her mother the night she died.

May you like

He had waited fifteen years.

And now that the family was exposed, he was coming back to take everything.
