Chapter 13 - The Brother Who Was Already There

Nobody moved.
Daniel Hale stood in the kitchen doorway.
He looked nothing like Adrian at first glance.
Then Olivia saw it.
The eyes.
The slight tilt of his head.
The controlled stillness.
Adrian stared at him.
For once, he had no words.
Daniel looked at Olivia instead.
“You’re Olivia.”
She nodded.
“You knew?”
“For three months.”
“How?”
Daniel looked at Caleb.
Caleb lowered his eyes.
“He found me.”
Olivia turned.
“You knew.”
Caleb nodded.
“I’m sorry.”
Derek laughed bitterly.
“Apparently everyone has a secret.”
Mason almost smiled.
Daniel stepped inside.
“I didn’t know what was true.”
Adrian finally spoke.
“Daniel.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Don’t.”
Adrian stopped.
Daniel’s voice remained calm.
“I spent twenty-nine years without you.”
“I looked for you.”
“So you say.”
“I did.”
“While running the same company that erased my name?”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“My father did that.”
“And you worked for him.”
Adrian had no answer.
Olivia understood Daniel’s anger immediately.
It sounded like her own.
Daniel looked at her.
“I’m sorry about your mother.”
“Our mother.”
He nodded.
“Our mother.”
The words felt strange.
But not wrong.
Olivia looked at him carefully.
“You knew her?”
“No.”
“You found the journal?”
“Part of it.”
“How?”
“Caleb.”
Olivia turned toward the injured guard.
Caleb exhaled.
“My father worked at Vaughn Strategic.”
Derek frowned.
“Who?”
“Arthur Cole.”
Derek recognized the name.
“He was security director.”
“Yes.”
“He died.”
“Ten years ago.”
Caleb looked at Daniel.
“Before he died, he told me Evelyn Bennett had a son.”
Grace sat down.
The web kept expanding.
Daniel continued.
“Caleb spent years tracing adoption records.”
“Why?”
Caleb answered.
“Because my father believed Daniel could expose the family.”
Derek said, “Or control it.”
Daniel looked at him.
“I don’t want your company.”
Adrian replied, “You may not have a choice.”
Daniel laughed.
“That sounds exactly like something a Vaughn would say.”
Olivia almost smiled.
Adrian looked wounded.
She did not feel sorry for him.
Thomas stepped forward.
“Daniel.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You’re Thomas.”
“Yes.”
“You raised Olivia.”
“Yes.”
Daniel’s expression softened slightly.
“Thank you.”
Thomas looked surprised.
Daniel continued.
“My mother trusted you.”
Thomas’s eyes filled.
“She loved you.”
Daniel looked away.
It was the first time his control cracked.
Olivia stepped closer.
“We have her journal.”
“I know.”
“You’ve read it?”
“No.”
“Do you want to?”
Daniel stared at the basement door.
“Yes.”
Adrian stepped forward.
Daniel immediately raised his hand.
“No.”
Adrian stopped.
“You stay there.”
Adrian obeyed.
Everyone noticed.
Daniel and Olivia went downstairs.
Grace joined them.
Mason stayed near the entrance.
Derek watched Adrian.
Thomas sat in silence.
In the hidden room, Olivia gave Daniel the journal.
He sat at the desk.
He read slowly.
Olivia watched his expression change.
Hope.
Pain.
Anger.
Grief.
He stopped at the entry describing his birth.
His fingers trembled.
“She held me.”
Olivia nodded.
“She loved you.”
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“I spent my whole life thinking she didn’t want me.”
Olivia sat beside him.
“I spent my whole life thinking she died in an accident.”
Daniel laughed softly.
“We had terrible information.”
That made Olivia laugh too.
For the first time in hours, it felt human.
Grace gave them privacy.
Daniel turned another page.
Then stopped.
“What?”
Olivia leaned closer.
A page had been cut out.
Carefully.
Daniel frowned.
“Was it like this?”
“No.”
Olivia looked toward the shelves.
Someone had removed a page.
Daniel searched the surrounding entries.
The missing section came after Evelyn wrote that she had located him.
Before the entry warning that Adrian would use him.
Olivia’s heartbeat quickened.
“That page said where you were.”
“Maybe.”
“And someone removed it.”
Daniel stood.
“Who had access?”
“Everyone upstairs.”
They returned.
Olivia held the journal.
“A page is missing.”
Adrian frowned.
“What page?”
“The one describing where Daniel lived.”
Thomas looked down.
Olivia noticed.
“Dad.”
He did not answer.
She stepped closer.
“You took it.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Adrian moved.
Mason blocked him.
Thomas continued.
“I took it twelve years ago.”
“Why?”
“To protect Daniel.”
“From Adrian?”
“From all of them.”
Derek stared.
“Where is it?”
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“I burned it.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“That was my history.”
“I know.”
“You had no right.”
“I know.”
“You keep saying that.”
Thomas looked broken.
“I was terrified.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You made another choice for me.”
Olivia understood the pain.
She had said almost the same thing to Derek.
Adrian looked at Thomas.
“You knew where he was.”
“Yes.”
“All these years?”
“For a while.”
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“You kept my son from me.”
Thomas stood.
“Your father stole him from Evelyn.”
“I wasn’t my father.”
“No.”
Thomas looked at him.
“You became worse.”
The room went still.
Adrian’s guards shifted.
Derek almost smiled.
Adrian said quietly, “Careful.”
Thomas laughed.
“What are you going to do?”
Adrian stared.
Thomas stepped closer.
“You already took everything.”
Daniel intervened.
“Enough.”
Everyone stopped.
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“You wanted the archive.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Adrian hesitated.
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Not the sentimental answer.”
Adrian exhaled.
“The trust.”
There it was.
Daniel nodded.
“Control of the company.”
“Yes.”
“Thank you.”
Adrian frowned.
“For what?”
“For finally telling the truth.”
Daniel looked at Olivia.
“I don’t want the company.”
She nodded.
“Then don’t take it.”
Derek said, “It’s not that simple.”
Daniel turned.
“Why?”
“Because if you refuse, the controlling shares transfer to Adrian.”
Daniel looked at him.
“And if I accept?”
“They transfer to you.”
Daniel laughed.
“So either I become part of the thing that ruined my mother, or I hand it to him.”
Adrian said nothing.
Grace spoke.
“There’s a third option.”
Everyone looked at her.
“What?”
She turned her laptop.
A clause from the trust.
Daniel read.
“If the qualifying heir demonstrates documented criminal misconduct by the sitting trustee, the trust enters external receivership.”
Mason smiled.
“So you don’t take the company.”
Grace nodded.
“You expose it.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
Daniel looked at the archive.
Olivia understood.
Their mother had spent years collecting exactly what they needed.
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“You wanted me to inherit.”
Adrian stared.
Daniel smiled without warmth.
“Congratulations.”
May you like
He placed his hand on the archive.
“I accept.”
