Chapter 11 - The Child Before Olivia

Olivia sat on the basement floor.
The photograph shook in her hands.
Her mother.
A newborn boy.
Daniel.
Nothing made sense.
Rebecca leaned against a shelf.
“She never told me.”
Olivia looked at her.
“You were her sister-in-law.”
“I know.”
“You were close.”
“I thought we were.”
Mason examined the date.
“1997.”
Derek frowned.
“That was before she met your father.”
Olivia looked at him.
“Then who was Daniel’s father?”
Nobody answered.
Grace searched the files.
“There may be something here.”
The hidden room contained hundreds of folders.
Each labeled by year.
Grace opened 1997.
Inside were hospital invoices.
Adoption records.
A birth certificate copy.
Olivia reached for it.
The mother was listed as Evelyn Harper.
Her mother’s maiden name.
The father field was blank.
The child’s full name.
Daniel Harper.
Mason asked, “What happened to him?”
Grace found another file.
Court documents.
Temporary guardianship.
Then adoption.
The adoptive parents’ names were redacted.
Olivia stared.
“My mother gave him away.”
Rebecca whispered, “She was twenty.”
Derek looked toward another folder.
“Or someone forced her.”
Olivia hated that he might be right.
Grace opened a handwritten journal.
Evelyn’s writing.
The first entry was dated March 1997.
Olivia read aloud.
“I thought Adrian would choose us.”
She stopped.
Derek closed his eyes.
Mason stared.
Adrian.
The father.
Olivia continued.
“He says his family will never accept the child.”
Her voice trembled.
“He says there is another way.”
Rebecca covered her mouth.
Grace whispered, “Adrian was Daniel’s father.”
Derek looked sick.
Olivia felt nothing.
Not yet.
The shock was too large.
She turned the page.
“I signed the papers today.”
“I told myself Daniel deserves safety.”
“Adrian promised we would get him back when the time was right.”
Olivia stopped reading.
She understood the photograph now.
A.V. PROMISED EVERYTHING.
Not money.
Not power.
Their son.
Mason leaned against the desk.
“He never got him back.”
Olivia turned pages.
“No.”
The journal continued.
Adrian disappeared.
Evelyn joined Vaughn Strategic to find out why.
There she discovered Adrian had not merely abandoned her.
His family had orchestrated the adoption.
Derek’s father had paid attorneys.
The records were sealed.
Daniel vanished into another family.
Grace whispered, “That’s why your mother went after them.”
Olivia nodded.
“It started with Daniel.”
Then she found another entry.
“I met Thomas.”
Olivia’s breath caught.
Her father.
“He knows about Daniel.”
“He says he doesn’t care.”
“He says the Vaughns deserve to answer for what they did.”
Rebecca began crying.
Olivia continued.
“Thomas believes we can expose them.”
“He makes me feel safe.”
For the first time, Olivia felt warmth.
Then the entries became darker.
Evelyn discovered illegal accounts.
Shell companies.
Payoffs.
Private surveillance.
Threats.
Then a new name appeared repeatedly.
Daniel Vale.
Derek’s uncle.
Grace noticed.
“Different Daniel.”
Derek nodded.
“He must have helped her.”
The journal confirmed it.
Daniel Vale had passed internal records to Evelyn.
He wanted to destroy Derek’s father.
Why?
A family dispute.
Inheritance.
Resentment.
Perhaps conscience.
No entry explained everything.
Then Grace found the final page.
Two days before Evelyn’s death.
Olivia read.
“Thomas thinks Adrian has returned.”
“I don’t believe him.”
“Daniel Vale says Adrian never left.”
“He says the boy is alive.”
Olivia stopped.
Mason stepped closer.
“Your brother.”
She nodded.
The final sentence.
“If Daniel Harper is alive, Adrian will use him.”
Olivia looked at Derek.
“Use him how?”
Derek’s face was pale.
“To inherit control.”
Grace frowned.
“What?”
Derek walked toward the file shelves.
“My grandfather structured the private family trust in a strange way.”
Mason said, “Of course he did.”
Derek ignored him.
“The controlling shares transfer through the oldest biological descendant of each branch.”
Grace’s eyes widened.
“Adrian’s oldest son.”
“Yes.”
“Daniel.”
“Yes.”
Olivia stood.
“So my brother could control Vaughn Strategic.”
“If his identity is proven.”
“And Adrian wants him.”
“Maybe already found him.”
Olivia thought about the fake call.
The voice manipulation.
The tracker.
The elaborate trap.
Adrian had wanted the archive.
But he also wanted Olivia.
Why?
Because she could prove Daniel’s identity.
Grace searched the documents.
“There must be DNA records.”
Derek nodded.
“Or the original adoption certificate.”
Rebecca asked, “Would that be enough?”
“Combined with Evelyn’s files.”
A sound came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Mason whispered, “Car.”
Grace closed the journal.
Derek killed the lights.
They listened.
A door opened upstairs.
Footsteps entered the house.
One person.
Slow.
Calm.
Olivia moved behind the shelves.
Mason stood beside the hidden room entrance.
Derek held the knife.
Grace prepared to shut the door.
Then a voice called from upstairs.
“Olivia.”
She froze.
Her father.
“Dad?”
Derek grabbed her arm.
“Wait.”
She pulled free.
“That’s my father.”
“Could be a recording.”
Then the voice again.
“Liv.”
Only her father called her that.
Olivia ran upstairs.
Mason followed.
Derek cursed and followed too.
Thomas Bennett stood in the kitchen.
Bruised.
Exhausted.
But alive.
Olivia stopped.
Her father looked at her.
Then at Derek.
His expression hardened.
Olivia rushed forward.
Thomas held her.
For one brief second, all the secrets disappeared.
She was a daughter again.
Then she pulled back.
“How did you get away?”
Thomas looked toward the road.
“I didn’t.”
Olivia’s heart sank.
“What?”
Headlights flooded the windows.
Several vehicles entered the driveway.
Thomas looked at her.
“I was released.”
Derek whispered, “Why?”
Thomas stared at him.
“Because Adrian wanted me to bring Olivia home.”
A voice came from the porch.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Thank you, Thomas.”
May you like
Olivia turned.
Adrian Vaughn stood outside the open front door.
