Chapter 17 - Daniel Vale Returns

The judge adjourned the emergency hearing for two hours.
Samuel slammed the laptop shut.
“This is bad.”
Mason looked at him.
“We stopped the transfer.”
“Yes.”
“So why bad?”
“Because Vale’s petition freezes every trust asset.”
Grace frowned.
“That sounds useful.”
“Not when he also requested appointment as emergency receiver.”
Adrian laughed.
“He wants the company.”
Derek nodded.
“He always did.”
Olivia looked at Thomas.
“You knew he was alive.”
Thomas hesitated.
“I suspected.”
“When?”
“After Evelyn died.”
“Why?”
“The boating accident never made sense.”
Adrian paced.
“My uncle disappeared because Father found out he was selling records.”
Derek added, “He returned now because Father is dead and the trust is vulnerable.”
Daniel looked at Olivia.
“Does he know about me?”
“He filed after your claim.”
Samuel nodded.
“He knows now.”
Grace checked the filing.
“His petition includes exhibits.”
She opened one.
Everyone stared.
Photographs of the archive.
Recent.
Taken inside the hidden room.
Olivia felt cold.
“He’s been in the house.”
Thomas whispered, “Impossible.”
Grace enlarged the metadata.
“Three weeks ago.”
Caleb looked down.
Derek noticed.
“Caleb.”
Everyone turned.
Caleb closed his eyes.
“I met him.”
Olivia stared.
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
“Why?”
“He contacted me about Daniel.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You never told me.”
“I didn’t know who he was.”
“You’re lying.”
Caleb looked ashamed.
“I knew his name.”
Silence.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You used him to find me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he had the adoption records.”
Olivia understood.
Daniel Vale had been the missing link.
He knew where Evelyn’s son had gone.
He had helped Caleb find Daniel.
Then he had photographed the archive.
Grace asked, “What did he want in return?”
Caleb whispered, “Nothing.”
Derek laughed.
“No one in my family does anything for nothing.”
Caleb looked at Daniel.
“He said he wanted Evelyn’s son to know the truth.”
Adrian scoffed.
“He wants leverage.”
A new message appeared on Grace’s laptop.
Unknown sender.
A meeting location.
Old Central Station.
9:00 a.m.
One sentence.
BRING EVELYN’S CHILDREN.
Olivia stared.
Daniel whispered, “Children.”
Plural.
Grace said, “He wants both of you.”
Derek immediately said, “No.”
Olivia looked at him.
“You don’t decide.”
“I know.”
He paused.
“But no.”
Daniel looked at Olivia.
“We go.”
She nodded.
Adrian said, “Absolutely not.”
Daniel laughed.
“You also don’t decide.”
Adrian’s expression darkened.
Samuel checked the time.
“Vale’s hearing is at eleven.”
Grace looked at the message.
“He wants to meet before court.”
Mason said, “Because he wants something.”
Olivia nodded.
“The archive.”
Thomas shook his head.
“Don’t.”
She looked at her father.
“We don’t bring everything.”
Grace smiled slightly.
“Decoy.”
Derek nodded.
“For once, we agree.”
They prepared.
Grace copied selected harmless files onto a drive.
Samuel remained at the church with Thomas, Rebecca, and Caleb.
Nora volunteered to contact courthouse security.
Nobody fully trusted her.
But they needed her.
Olivia, Daniel, Mason, Derek, Grace, and Adrian drove downtown.
An unlikely group.
The city was waking.
Commuters filled sidewalks.
Coffee shops opened.
Life continued.
Old Central Station had been abandoned for redevelopment.
They entered through a side gate.
The enormous waiting hall was empty.
Dust floated in beams of morning light.
At exactly nine, footsteps echoed.
Daniel Vale emerged from behind a column.
He was in his early sixties.
Silver hair.
Expensive coat.
Calm smile.
Olivia recognized him from the old photograph.
Vale looked at her.
“Evelyn’s eyes.”
She hated him instantly.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You helped Caleb find me.”
Vale nodded.
“I did.”
“Why?”
“Because you deserved your name.”
Adrian laughed.
Vale looked at him.
“My favorite nephew.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
Derek stepped beside him.
Vale smiled wider.
“And the disappointment.”
Derek almost smiled.
“Still alive, Uncle.”
Vale looked at Olivia again.
“You brought the archive?”
Grace held up the decoy drive.
Vale laughed.
“You think I want files?”
Olivia frowned.
“Then why are we here?”
Vale walked closer.
“Because your mother left something that never entered the archive.”
“What?”
“A confession.”
Olivia’s heartbeat quickened.
Vale continued.
“Recorded the night she died.”
Thomas had never mentioned it.
Derek asked, “You have it?”
Vale shook his head.
“Evelyn hid it.”
“Where?”
Vale smiled.
“She told only one person.”
Olivia knew before he said it.
“Thomas.”
Vale nodded.
“Your father.”
Olivia stared.
“My father said nothing.”
“Thomas has spent twelve years lying to you.”
Daniel looked angry.
“So has everyone else.”
Vale nodded approvingly.
“You really are Evelyn’s son.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“What’s in the confession?”
Vale’s expression changed.
“Her account of who ordered Daniel’s adoption.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“My father.”
Vale smiled.
“No.”
Silence.
Adrian stared.
Vale continued.
“Your father executed the paperwork.”
“Who ordered it?”
Vale looked at him.
“You did.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
Daniel stared.
“No.”
Vale nodded.
“Adrian was twenty-five.”
Adrian shook his head.
“I told Father to keep Daniel safe.”
“You told him to make the problem disappear.”
“That’s a lie.”
Vale shrugged.
“Then hear Evelyn.”
Olivia stepped closer.
“Where is the recording?”
Vale looked at her.
“Your father hid it because it incriminates him too.”
Thomas.
Again.
Olivia felt anger rising.
Vale continued.
“Evelyn discovered Thomas had been cooperating with federal investigators before they met.”
Nora’s supervisor.
The network.
Her father had been connected earlier than anyone admitted.
Grace asked, “What do you want?”
Vale smiled.
“The truth in court.”
Derek laughed.
“You’ve never wanted truth.”
Vale looked at him.
“No.”
His smile vanished.
“I want revenge.”
“For what?”
Vale stared at Adrian.
“For my brother stealing my life.”
Adrian replied, “Your brother is dead.”
“Yes.”
Vale looked at Daniel.
“So now I’ll take his legacy.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You won’t use me.”
“I don’t need you.”
Vale held up a court order.
“If Evelyn’s confession proves the trust was created through fraud, the entire structure collapses.”
Samuel’s words echoed in Olivia’s mind.
Vale did not want the inheritance.
He wanted to destroy it.
Maybe that part was good.
But revenge made people dangerous.
Vale stepped closer to Olivia.
“Ask your father where he hid the tape.”
Then he walked away.
Mason called after him.
“That’s it?”
Vale turned.
“No.”
He looked at Adrian.
“One more thing.”
He smiled.
“I didn’t cause Evelyn’s crash.”
Thomas’s earlier accusation.
Vale continued.
“Adrian didn’t either.”
Olivia stared.
“Who did?”
Vale looked directly at Grace.
“Ask your friend.”
May you like
Grace went pale.
Everyone turned toward her.
