Chapter 14 - The Inheritance Trap

Adrian stared at Daniel.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“That makes two of us.”

Derek stepped toward the table.

“Grace.”

She understood.

“If Daniel formally asserts his claim, the trust process begins.”

“How fast?”

“Depends.”

“On what?”

“Whether the trustees challenge his identity.”

Adrian laughed.

“They will.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Then we prove it.”

Grace nodded toward the archive.

“Birth certificate.”

Olivia held up the photograph.

“Journal.”

Thomas added, “Medical records.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“You think paperwork will save you?”

Olivia looked at him.

“No.”

She pointed at the archive.

“But your family’s obsession with paperwork might destroy you.”

Mason laughed once.

Derek looked at Olivia.

There was something almost like pride in his expression.

She ignored it.

Nora stepped forward.

Everyone had nearly forgotten she was there.

“That trust filing won’t survive.”

Grace glared.

“Why?”

“Because the board is already meeting.”

Derek looked at Adrian.

“You called them.”

Adrian said nothing.

Nora continued.

“They’re preparing an emergency transfer.”

Daniel frowned.

“To Adrian?”

“Yes.”

“On what basis?”

“Presumed death of qualifying heirs.”

Daniel laughed.

“I’m standing here.”

“Not publicly.”

Grace understood.

“They don’t know he exists.”

Nora nodded.

“Exactly.”

Olivia looked at Daniel.

“So we make him public.”

Adrian’s face tightened.

“That would put him at risk.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You mean it would put your plan at risk.”

Adrian did not answer.

Grace opened social platforms.

“We release the documents.”

Derek stopped her.

“No.”

Olivia turned sharply.

“Why?”

“Because once Daniel’s identity is public, every client connected to the network knows he may have the archive.”

Daniel nodded.

“And they come after me.”

“Yes.”

Mason said, “They already are.”

Derek looked at him.

“Not all of them.”

Silence.

The scale of it became clear.

Adrian was not the only threat.

The archive implicated people with money.

Influence.

Private security.

Government connections.

Olivia asked, “What’s safer?”

Derek looked at her.

“Nothing.”

She nodded.

“Then we stop pretending safety is available.”

Daniel looked at Grace.

“How do we file?”

“Lawyer.”

Thomas shook his head.

“Not just any lawyer.”

He looked at Rebecca.

She frowned.

“What?”

Thomas said, “Call Samuel.”

Rebecca froze.

“No.”

Olivia asked, “Who’s Samuel?”

Rebecca looked annoyed.

“My ex-husband.”

Mason blinked.

Derek almost laughed.

Rebecca glared.

“Not funny.”

Thomas continued.

“He’s a trust attorney.”

Grace asked, “Can we trust him?”

Rebecca considered.

“No.”

Everyone stared.

She sighed.

“But we can predict him.”

They called Samuel Price.

He answered on the fourth ring.

“Rebecca?”

She looked surprised.

“How did you know?”

“You only call after midnight when something is on fire.”

Mason whispered, “I like him.”

Rebecca ignored him.

“I need a family trust filing.”

“At midnight?”

“Yes.”

“Whose?”

She looked at Derek.

“The Vaughns.”

Silence.

Then Samuel said, “I’m hanging up.”

Rebecca replied, “Evelyn’s son is alive.”

Another silence.

Longer.

Samuel’s voice changed.

“Where are you?”

Rebecca looked at Olivia.

Olivia shook her head.

“Not telling you yet.”

Samuel laughed.

“Still charming.”

“We need to initiate heir recognition before the board transfers control.”

Samuel said, “Send me proof.”

Grace prepared encrypted copies.

Adrian stepped forward.

“No.”

Daniel turned.

“You don’t give orders.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You don’t understand what happens if this becomes public.”

Daniel’s voice remained calm.

“You don’t understand what happens if it doesn’t.”

Adrian stared at his son.

For the first time, Olivia wondered whether Adrian’s concern was partly real.

That did not make him trustworthy.

But it made him more complicated.

Grace transmitted the documents.

Samuel reviewed them remotely.

Minutes passed.

Everyone waited.

Then his voice returned.

“This is enough to file a provisional claim.”

Daniel exhaled.

“Do it.”

Samuel said, “You understand this becomes a court record.”

“Yes.”

“Your identity will be exposed.”

“Yes.”

“Your mother’s history too.”

Daniel looked at Olivia.

She nodded.

“Yes.”

Samuel said, “Then I’m filing.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Derek looked toward the window.

“We need to leave the house.”

Mason nodded.

“Why?”

“Once the filing hits, this location becomes dangerous.”

Grace checked the road.

Adrian’s guards looked uncertain.

Daniel noticed.

“You can go.”

They looked at Adrian.

He said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“I’m not keeping anyone here.”

One guard lowered his weapon.

Then walked out.

The second remained.

Adrian looked at him.

“Go.”

He left.

Nora stayed.

Grace stared.

“Why?”

Nora looked at her.

“Because I’m tired.”

“Of what?”

“Being owned.”

Adrian laughed.

“You’re dramatic.”

Nora ignored him.

Grace asked, “Who owns you?”

Nora looked toward the archive.

“Half the names in those files.”

Silence.

She continued.

“My investigation four years ago was real.”

Derek frowned.

“Then why did it disappear?”

“Because my supervisor was on Vaughn’s payroll.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Not mine.”

“Your father’s.”

Derek’s expression changed.

Nora continued.

“He gave me a choice.”

Grace asked, “Money?”

“Or prison.”

“For what?”

“A mistake.”

Nora would not elaborate.

Olivia realized Nora had been compromised.

But perhaps not willingly.

“What changed tonight?”

Nora looked at Daniel.

“I realized they planned to erase him.”

Adrian frowned.

“Who?”

“The board.”

Silence.

Nora took out her phone.

She displayed a message.

A photograph of Daniel.

An instruction beneath it.

CONFIRM IDENTITY.

TERMINATE CLAIM.

Daniel’s face hardened.

Derek cursed.

Adrian grabbed the phone.

“Who sent this?”

Nora shook her head.

“Encrypted.”

Adrian looked genuinely furious.

Olivia watched him.

“You didn’t order it.”

“No.”

For the first time, everyone in the room understood the same thing.

Adrian had believed he was controlling the operation.

He wasn’t.

Someone above him had already decided Daniel was too dangerous to live.

Grace’s laptop chimed.

Samuel’s voice came through.

“Claim filed.”

Daniel looked at Olivia.

She nodded.

Then every light in the blue house went out.

A second later, headlights appeared through the windows.

Not two vehicles.

Not three.

More than ten.

Derek whispered, “Board security.”

Adrian stared outside.

Olivia looked at him.

“Still think you’re in control?”

May you like

Adrian’s answer was quiet.

“No.”
