Chapter 14 - The Unlikely Savior. The metallic click of the revolver’s hammer echoed like a death knell in the silent study.

Emily closed her eyes tight, bracing herself for the inevitable, blinding flash of gunfire.

She thought of her cramped apartment, her quiet life, and how it had all been stolen by this monster.

Suddenly, a sharp, authoritative voice commanded Daniel to drop the weapon immediately.

Emily opened her eyes to see Vanessa standing just a few feet away, her manicured hands trembling violently.

In her grasp was a small, pearl-handled derringer she had pulled from her designer clutch.

The tiny gun was aimed directly at the center of her husband’s chest.

Daniel barked a harsh, condescending laugh, refusing to move the revolver away from Emily’s head.

He mocked his wife, reminding her that she never had the stomach for actual violence.

He called her a pathetic, fragile accessory who relied entirely on his bloody empire to maintain her lavish lifestyle.

Tears streamed down Vanessa’s pale face, ruining her perfect, expensive makeup.

She admitted that she had been a coward for years, willfully ignoring the monsters hiding in her own home.

She confessed that framing Emily was the most despicable thing she had ever done in her entire life.

But watching Daniel prepare to execute an innocent girl on their living room floor had finally snapped her awake.

Vanessa stepped forward, pressing the barrel of the derringer firmly against Daniel’s silk vest.

She told him that if he pulled his trigger, she would not hesitate to pull hers.

For the first time all night, genuine, unadulterated fear flashed across Daniel Sterling’s arrogant face.

He knew his wife was utterly broken, making her completely unpredictable and highly dangerous.

Slowly, agonizingly, he lowered the silver revolver, loosening his iron grip on Emily’s collar.

Emily stumbled backward, gasping for air as she put distance between herself and the billionaire killer.

Vanessa did not lower her weapon, keeping her dark, tear-filled eyes locked entirely on her husband.

She ordered Emily to run toward the coastal cliffs and hide until the federal authorities finally arrived.

Daniel roared in sudden, explosive anger, lunging forward to wrestle the tiny gun from his wife's hands.

A gunshot rang out, deafening and chaotic, as the two billionaires violently crashed into the heavy wooden desk.
