Chapter 3 - The Velvet Guillotine.The tension in the air was so thick it felt like it could shatter the crystal chandeliers above.
Emily stood defenseless in her plain housekeeping uniform while Vanessa faced off against her in the fitted black dress.
Between them, the large, brown leather handbag sat on the marble floor right where it had been from the start.
Without a word of warning, Vanessa’s hand shot out.
Then came a single slap.
Vanessa struck Emily once across the cheek with a vicious, stinging force.
No further violence followed.
No blood was drawn, but the sheer indignity of the blow felt far worse than any physical pain.
Emily stumbled back, clutching her stinging face as the wealthy onlookers gasped in unison.
Vanessa stepped forward, her voice vibrating with righteous fury.
She shouted that Emily was a thief who had betrayed the family’s trust.
Emily fought back tears, the sting of the slap burning hot against her pale skin.
She looked desperately around the room, finding no sympathy in the cold eyes of the elite guests.
She cried out that she did not take anything, her voice cracking under the immense pressure.
Before Vanessa could launch another assault, Daniel finally stepped forward and intervened.
He grabbed his wife’s wrist, pulling her back and ordering her to stop making a scene.
He looked down at the floor, his expression unreadable and stern.
He commanded the security chief to open the bag and settle the matter once and for all.
The burly security guard knelt down and pulled the gold zipper open with a loud, metallic rasp.
Inside, resting incongruously on a piece of black velvet, was the large, sparkling diamond statement necklace.
Margaret covered her mouth in shock, letting out a choked sob.
In an instant, the entire room seemed to turn against Emily, their mutters growing loud and hostile.
