Chapter 7 - The Basement Shadows. The service elevator groaned softly as it descended into the darkest depths of the cliffside estate.

Emily watched the floor indicator light up, counting down the levels until the doors slid open with a metallic hiss.

The air down here was thick, damp, and overwhelmingly cold, smelling of aged oak barrels and salty sea spray.

Flickering fluorescent lights cast long, distorted shadows across the endless rows of vintage wine racks.

She stepped out cautiously, the rubber soles of her sensible shoes squeaking faintly against the polished concrete floor.

The basement was massive, stretching out directly beneath the entire footprint of the grand mansion above.

She walked past the primary wine cellar, heading toward the older, decommissioned sections of the estate’s foundation.

Her flashlight beam cut through the absolute darkness of the unused service corridors.

She kept her eyes glued to the floor, scanning the dusty concrete for any signs of a struggle or foul play.

For ten terrifying minutes, she found nothing but cobwebs and discarded crates of antique silverware.

Then, a sudden, metallic scraping sound echoed from the far end of the tunnel.

Emily instantly clicked off her flashlight and pressed her back against the freezing stone wall.

She held her breath, listening intently as heavy footsteps approached her position.

Someone else was down here in the dark.

A beam of tactical light swept across the corridor, missing her face by mere inches.

Emily recognized the silhouette of one of Vance’s elite private security contractors.

The man was holding a suppressed pistol at his side, his posture rigid and aggressive.

He was not conducting a standard security patrol; he was actively hunting for something, or someone.

As the guard moved past her hiding spot behind a stack of wooden crates, Emily noticed a dark smudge on the heel of his tactical boot.

It was fresh, crimson blood.

She waited until the guard rounded the corner before quietly exhaling the breath she had been holding.

Creeping forward, she moved toward the area the armed man had just left.

At the very end of the corridor, a heavy iron door stood slightly ajar.

Emily pushed it open, wincing as the rusted hinges let out a quiet, agonizing squeal.

Inside, the beam of her flashlight revealed a scene straight out of a brutal horror film.
