Chapter 16 - The Siege. The grand foyer was entirely unrecognizable from the glamorous space it had been just an hour ago.

Red and blue police lights violently strobed through the massive front windows, casting eerie shadows across the cold marble floor.

Emily sprinted toward the main entrance, her lungs burning and her uniform stained with soot and blood.

The deafening roar of a police helicopter hovering directly above the estate rattled the crystal chandeliers remaining on the ceiling.

Before she could reach the heavy oak doors, they were suddenly blown violently off their brass hinges.

A heavily armed FBI SWAT team poured into the mansion, their laser sights cutting through the thickening smoke.

Emily immediately dropped to her knees, throwing her hands high in the air as tactical officers swarmed past her.

They barked orders over their radios, forming a perimeter to secure the burning east wing of the sprawling estate.

Suddenly, a hail of automatic gunfire erupted from the grand staircase, tearing through the foyer and shattering the remaining glass.

Vance and his surviving cartel mercenaries had emerged from the basement, refusing to go down without a brutal fight.

Emily pressed herself flat against the marble floor as bullets zipped dangerously close to her head.

The marble reception desk, where she had nervously stood at the beginning of the night, exploded into jagged shrapnel.

She covered her ears, the deafening echoes of the firefight making her skull throb with agonizing pain.

Through the chaos, she spotted Vance moving aggressively toward the massive side exit that led to the cliffside gardens.

He was bleeding heavily from his shoulder, but he clutched a reinforced titanium briefcase tightly to his chest.

Emily instantly knew that briefcase held the physical backup ledgers, the only offline proof of the cartel's entire global network.

If Vance escaped with those files, the syndicate would simply rebuild, and they would hunt her down for the rest of her life.

Adrenaline completely overrode her exhaustion as she scrambled on her hands and knees toward the shattered garden doors.

She slipped out into the raging storm, leaving the blinding chaos of the police raid behind her.

The freezing Pacific rain hit her face like tiny daggers, but she did not stop running.
