Chapter 8 - The Silent Assassin.A massive pool of deep red liquid stained the center of the subterranean storage room.

Drag marks smeared the blood across the concrete, leading toward a large, industrial incinerator built into the far wall.

Emily covered her mouth with both hands, violently fighting the sudden urge to vomit.

Vanessa had not been framed for a jewelry heist; she had been blackmailed into covering up a ruthless murder.

Before Emily could process the horrifying reality of the room, a cold, gloved hand clamped tightly over her mouth.

A powerful arm wrapped around her waist, lifting her entirely off the floor.

She kicked wildly, her sensible black shoes connecting with the solid, heavily armored shins of her unseen attacker.

A deep, raspy voice whispered directly into her ear, telling her to stop fighting if she wanted to live.

Emily refused to surrender, her survival instincts overriding her paralyzing fear.

She reached into her apron pocket, grasping the heavy, brass-handled feather duster she used for the antique vases.

With a sudden, violent twist of her torso, she jammed the solid brass handle backward into the attacker’s ribs.

The man grunted in pain, his grip loosening just enough for Emily to break free.

She spun around, swinging her leather handbag with all her might directly into the guard’s face.

The heavy metal zipper sliced across his cheek, sending him stumbling backward into the pool of blood.

The attacker slipped, his gun clattering loudly across the concrete floor.

Emily did not hesitate for a single second.

She sprinted out of the storage room, running blindly into the pitch-black labyrinth of the basement corridors.

The guard recovered quickly, his heavy boots pounding the floor as he chased after her.

He fired a suppressed shot, the bullet sparking dangerously off the stone wall just inches from Emily's head.

She ducked into a narrow side passage, navigating the familiar twists and turns of the estate's plumbing infrastructure.

Her lungs burned with exertion as she threw herself behind a massive industrial boiler.

She could hear the assassin stalking the aisles, his breathing heavy and ragged.

Emily pulled the burner phone from her pocket, realizing it was her only leverage to survive the night.

She needed to find a way out of this underground tomb before she became the next body shoved into the incinerator.
