Chapter 10 - The Final Reckoning
Before Vanessa could attempt to run toward the exit, the heavy ballroom doors swung open.
The same two detectives who had come for Emily yesterday marched straight into the room.
This time, they were not looking anywhere near the innocent estate manager.
They walked directly up to Vanessa, grabbing her arms forcefully.
"Vanessa Sterling, you are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and criminal conspiracy," the lead detective announced.
The cold snap of the steel handcuffs echoed loudly over the silent, stunned crowd.
"You cannot do this to me!" Vanessa shrieked, fighting wildly against the officers.
She glared venomously at Emily as she was dragged mercilessly out of the glamorous ballroom.
"I will make you pay for this, you worthless little maid!"
Her pathetic screams faded away into the night, swallowed entirely by the wailing police sirens.
The heavy, oppressive darkness that had haunted the mansion for weeks was finally lifted forever.
The guests slowly began to murmur amongst themselves, utterly scandalized but completely clear on who the true villain was.
Daniel turned to the crowd, raising a glass of champagne to command their absolute attention.
"I want to publicly apologize to Miss Emily Carter for the horrific injustices she has faced."
He looked directly at her, his dark eyes filled with genuine emotion and deep respect.
"She has shown more grace and integrity than anyone I have ever known in my entire life."
The crowd erupted into enthusiastic applause, raising their own glasses to honor the young woman.
Later that evening, after the last guest had finally departed, the mansion fell beautifully quiet.
Emily walked out onto the grand terrace, letting the cool night air wash over her tired but victorious spirit.
Daniel followed her outside, standing close enough for their shoulders to gently brush together.
"It is completely over now, Emily," he whispered softly into the peaceful night.
She looked up at the bright stars, feeling a profound sense of true freedom for the very first time.
"I could never have survived this without your unwavering belief in me, Daniel."
He reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
"You proved your own innocence the moment you refused to back down from the fight."
