Chapter 5 - The Unseen Trap

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers cast eerie shadows across the marble foyer.
Emily stood completely frozen in the exact spot where Vanessa had slapped her just a few weeks prior.
Two stern-looking detectives walked through the front doors, holding a thick, manila folder.
Daniel immediately stepped in front of Emily, using his body as a protective shield.
"What is the meaning of this unannounced intrusion on my property?"
The lead detective flashed a silver badge, completely unfazed by Daniel's wealth and authority.
"We are here to question Miss Emily Carter regarding a massive embezzlement scheme."
The words hit Emily like a speeding freight train, instantly draining all the blood from her face.
"Embezzlement?" she repeated blindly, her voice shaking with absolute terror.
The second detective opened the folder and pulled out a stack of forged bank statements.
"Large sums of money from the Sterling Charity Foundation have been transferred into a hidden offshore account."
He pointed a thick finger directly at Emily's pale face.
"An account registered entirely under your name, Miss Carter."
Daniel let out a sharp bark of humorless laughter, shaking his head in total disbelief.
"That is completely impossible, as she has only been the estate manager for two weeks."
The detective coldly handed Daniel copies of the heavily manipulated financial documents.
"The digital signature on every single transfer belongs exclusively to her."
Emily felt the grand foyer begin to spin wildly around her.
This was a nightmare far worse than the incident with the diamond necklace.
Someone had gone to incredible lengths to meticulously construct this flawless financial trap.
Suddenly, a terrifying realization slammed into her mind with sickening clarity.
Vanessa.
Only Vanessa knew the internal workings of the foundation well enough to pull off such a complex manipulation.
Only Vanessa had the deep-seated hatred required to destroy an innocent person's life so thoroughly.
"I did not take a single penny from that foundation," Emily stated, her voice finally finding a desperate strength.
The detective reached toward his belt, unlatching a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.
"You can explain that to the judge, Miss Carter, because you are currently under arrest."
Daniel firmly grabbed the detective's wrist before he could touch Emily.
"If you arrest her without a proper warrant, I will personally ensure you lose your badge by tomorrow morning."
The tension in the room skyrocketed, feeling thick enough to cut with a knife.
The detective glared at Daniel, ultimately deciding not to push a billionaire on his own territory without backup.
"You have exactly twenty-four hours to produce her at the station, Mr. Sterling."
The officers turned and walked out, leaving a suffocating atmosphere of dread in their wake.

Emily collapsed into a nearby chair, burying her face in her trembling hands.
The battle for her reputation, and her freedom, had only just begun.
