Chapter 3 - Whispers of the Past

Three days had passed since Vanessa was forcefully escorted off the sprawling property.

Emily had accepted the promotion, completely trading her maid's uniform for professional business attire.

Her transition was surprisingly smooth, largely due to the unwavering support of Margaret and the rest of the staff.

They respected her far more than they had ever respected Vanessa's tyrannical rule.

However, the peace within the mansion felt fragile and temporary.

Emily sat at her new desk, reviewing a stack of vendor contracts for an upcoming charity gala.

She could not shake the lingering question of why Vanessa had targeted her so specifically.

During her lunch break, she decided to casually ask Margaret about the disgraced woman's history.

Margaret sighed deeply, wiping her hands on a clean kitchen towel.

"Vanessa was always a wildly insecure and deeply jealous woman."

The older woman poured two cups of tea and sat down across from Emily.

"She noticed the way Mr. Daniel looked at you when he thought no one was watching."

Emily felt a sudden rush of heat flood her cheeks.

"He never looked at me in any inappropriate way."

Margaret chuckled softly, stirring a spoonful of sugar into her warm tea.

"Not inappropriate, my dear, but certainly with a profound sense of admiration."

Vanessa had sensed that silent admiration and viewed Emily as a dangerous threat to her own ambitions.

She had planned to humiliate the young maid and secure her own unchallenged dominance in the household.

Instead, her malicious trap had spectacularly backfired, completely destroying her own future.

Later that afternoon, Daniel requested Emily's presence in the main conservatory to discuss the gala.

The glass room was filled with blooming orchids and the heavy scent of damp earth.

He was standing by a large fern, looking remarkably relaxed in a casual linen shirt.

"You have done an excellent job organizing the catering logistics, Emily."

She nodded politely, clutching her digital tablet tightly against her chest.

"Thank you, Daniel, as I want to ensure everything is absolutely perfect for the foundation."

He stepped closer, closing the professional distance between them just a fraction.

"You do not have to work yourself into the ground to prove you belong here."

His voice was incredibly gentle, contrasting sharply with the harsh reality of their previous interactions.

Emily looked up, meeting his intense, dark eyes for a brief moment.

She finally understood exactly what Margaret had been talking about in the kitchen.

There was a quiet, undeniable connection forming beneath the surface of their professional relationship.

But the memory of the stinging slap and the blinding humiliation still lingered in her mind.

She deliberately took a small step back, maintaining her emotional boundaries.

"I am simply doing the job you hired me to do."

Daniel nodded slowly, respecting her unspoken need for space and time.

Little did they know, a storm was actively brewing just beyond the iron gates of the estate.
