Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

Elias tracked Marcus's active phone signal to a run-down motel on the outskirts of the city.
The sky was just beginning to turn a pale shade of gray as the sun threatened to rise.
Daniel parked his expensive car a block away to avoid drawing unnecessary attention.
He turned to Emily, his voice dropping to a protective, serious whisper.
"I want you to stay locked inside this car while I handle this situation."
Emily shook her head stubbornly, reaching for the door handle.
"He ruined my reputation, and I deserve to look him in the eye when his lies fall apart."
Daniel stared at her for a long moment before finally nodding in reluctant agreement.
They walked quietly across the cracked pavement of the motel parking lot.
Room 204 was located on the second floor, directly at the end of a rusty exterior walkway.
Daniel did not bother knocking gently on the peeling wooden door.
He kicked it open with a sudden, violent force that shattered the cheap metal lock.
Marcus jumped up from the tangled bedsheets, reaching wildly for a gun on the nightstand.
Before his fingers could even touch the weapon, Daniel was already across the room.
He grabbed the investigator by the collar and slammed him hard against the dirty wall.
"You made a very expensive mistake when you decided to target my estate manager," Daniel growled.
Marcus coughed, trying desperately to pry Daniel's iron grip from his throat.
"I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, Sterling."
Daniel shoved him harder against the drywall, knocking a cheap painting onto the floor.
"We have you on camera buying the burner phone used to hack the foundation's accounts."
Emily stepped fully into the room, holding up a copy of the security photo.
"Vanessa paid you to frame me, and we already possess all the digital evidence to prove it."
Marcus's eyes darted frantically between Daniel's furious face and Emily's confident stance.
He knew he was completely trapped, and his loyalty to Vanessa ended exactly where his own survival began.
"She offered me fifty thousand dollars to manufacture a fake digital paper trail," Marcus confessed quickly.
He pointed a shaking hand toward a black laptop sitting on the small desk.
"All the original emails, the voice recordings of her giving the orders, and the real bank routing numbers are on that hard drive."
Daniel released Marcus, letting the disgraced investigator slide down the wall.

"You are going to pack up that laptop and come with us right now."
The missing pieces of the puzzle were finally locked securely into place.
