Chapter 1 - The Man in the Aisle

“Please, don’t.”

Elena Hart barely recognized her own voice.

The words came out as a whisper beneath the low hum of the private jet’s engines.

Adrian Mercer remained crouched in the narrow aisle between the cream leather seats.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

His eyes moved from Elena to the two children sitting beside her.

Oliver stared at him with innocent curiosity.

Lucy held her gray teddy bear against her chest as if the worn little toy could protect her from whatever tension had suddenly filled the cabin.

Adrian’s faint smile disappeared.

He had imagined this moment hundreds of times since discovering Elena was still alive and living only three states away.

He had imagined anger.

He had imagined accusations.

He had even imagined Elena slamming a door in his face.

He had never imagined two four-year-old children looking back at him with his own eyes.

Oliver tilted his head.

“Are you really Mom’s old friend?”

Elena immediately placed one hand over her son’s knee.

“Yes.”

Her answer came too quickly.

Adrian noticed.

So did Oliver.

The little boy frowned.

“Then why does Mom look scared?”

Elena inhaled slowly.

“I’m not scared.”

Lucy whispered into her teddy bear.

“You look scared.”

The directness of four-year-olds had never felt so devastating.

Adrian stood carefully.

He did not want his size or presence to frighten them.

“I think your mom and I need to talk.”

Elena’s expression hardened.

“We have nothing to discuss.”

“We have everything to discuss.”

The warmth vanished from Adrian’s voice.

Elena glanced toward the cockpit door.

The jet had already begun moving toward the runway.

“You need to get off this plane.”

“That became impossible about ninety seconds ago.”

Elena looked through the oval window.

Airport lights drifted past them.

Her face lost color.

“You let us take off?”

“I didn’t authorize the departure.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“You did.”

Elena looked toward the flight attendant.

The woman pretended to be checking something in the galley.

Adrian followed Elena’s stare.

“This aircraft belongs to Grant Aviation.”

Elena nodded.

“My employer arranged it.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Your employer?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“That’s none of your business.”

The engines increased in power.

Oliver’s face brightened.

“We’re flying!”

Lucy squeezed the teddy bear.

“Benny doesn’t like takeoffs.”

Adrian looked at the gray bear.

“Benny?”

Lucy nodded seriously.

“He gets nervous.”

Something flickered in Adrian’s expression.

Elena noticed.

“What?”

Adrian stared at the bear.

“Where did she get that?”

Elena’s body became still.

“It’s a toy.”

“I can see that.”

“Then why are you asking?”

Adrian leaned slightly closer.

“There’s a stitched letter M under the left paw.”

Elena said nothing.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“There’s also a blue thread behind the right ear where it was repaired.”

Lucy turned the bear around.

“There is!”

Oliver looked impressed.

“How did you know?”

Adrian did not answer him.

He looked directly at Elena.

“That bear was mine.”

The jet lifted from the runway.

Elena closed her eyes.

For four years, she had prepared herself for the possibility that Adrian Mercer might eventually find them.

She had changed apartments.

She had changed jobs.

She had avoided social media.

She had even stopped contacting mutual friends.

Yet she had never considered that the object that might expose everything would be a faded gray teddy bear.

Adrian sat across from them.

“Where did you get it, Elena?”

She looked out the window.

“Your sister gave it to me.”

Adrian froze.

“Ava?”

Elena nodded.

The name hurt both of them.

Ava Mercer had died three years earlier after a sudden illness.

She had been the only member of Adrian’s family Elena had trusted.

Adrian swallowed.

“When?”

“The night I left.”

Adrian stared at her.

“Ava knew?”

Elena did not answer.

“Did she know you were pregnant?”

Oliver stopped watching the window.

Lucy looked between the adults.

Elena’s eyes flashed a warning.

“Not in front of them.”

Adrian leaned back.

The answer was enough.

His hands slowly closed into fists.

He stared at Oliver.

Then Lucy.

Then Elena.

“You were pregnant.”

Elena’s voice became quiet.

“Yes.”

“When you disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“And they’re four.”

“Yes.”

Adrian glanced at the twins again.

His breathing changed.

Elena saw the exact second arithmetic became certainty.

He stood suddenly.

Oliver flinched.

Adrian immediately stopped.

He forced himself to lower his voice.

“How old are they exactly?”

“Adrian.”

“How old?”

Elena hesitated.

“Four years and seven months.”

His face drained of color.

The silence between them felt louder than the engines.

Adrian moved toward the rear of the cabin.

He braced both hands against the back of an empty seat.

For several seconds, he stared at nothing.

Elena had never seen him shaken like this.

Not when his father died.

Not when his family company nearly collapsed.

Not even when Elena had walked out of his life.

He finally turned around.

“Are they mine?”

Elena looked at the children.

Oliver had taken Lucy’s hand.

Lucy still clutched Benny.

Elena had promised herself that when this moment came, she would be strong.

She had promised herself she would remember every warning.

Every threat.

Every document.

Every reason she had disappeared.

But Adrian was not looking at her like a billionaire demanding something he owned.

He was looking at her like a man whose entire past had just broken open.

Elena swallowed.

Before she could answer, her phone vibrated.

One message appeared on the screen.

UNKNOWN NUMBER.

She opened it.

Four words appeared.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED GONE.

Elena’s fingers turned cold.

Adrian saw her expression.

“What happened?”

She quickly locked the screen.

“Nothing.”

Adrian crossed the aisle.

“Elena.”

“It’s nothing.”

“Show me.”

“No.”

Her phone vibrated again.

A second message arrived.

THIS TIME HE CAN’T SAVE YOU.

Elena stared at the words.

Then she looked at Adrian.

For the first time since he had stepped onto the plane, her anger disappeared.

What replaced it was something far more unsettling.

Recognition.

Someone knew Adrian had found them.

May you like

Someone knew exactly where they were.

And whoever had spent four years keeping the truth buried had just discovered that Elena Hart was no longer running alone.
