Chapter 12 - The Recording

Mara had discovered the file hidden inside metadata attached to one of Ava’s photographs.
By six in the morning, everyone was back in the conference room.
The children remained asleep under guard.
Adrian sat beside Elena.
Vivian sat opposite them.
Daniel stood near the wall.
Mara pressed play.
Ava’s voice came first.
“You told my mother Elena was planning to blackmail Adrian.”
Julian answered.
“You shouldn’t involve yourself.”
The recording quality was poor.
But the voice was unmistakable.
Ava continued.
“You forged documents.”
“No.”
“I saw the template files.”
A pause.
Then Julian spoke.
“You don’t understand what happens if Adrian has a child.”
“Then explain it.”
“He becomes untouchable.”
Ava laughed.
“He’s your brother.”
Julian’s voice hardened.
“He’s Richard’s son.”
“So are you.”
“No.”
Everyone in the room froze.
The recording had been made before Adrian supposedly knew the truth of Julian’s parentage.
Julian continued.
“I’m the secret they spent thirty years hiding.”
“They gave Adrian everything that should have been mine.”
Ava’s voice softened.
“That isn’t Adrian’s fault.”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“It does.”
“No.”
Julian sounded tired.
“Blood is the only thing this family respects.”
“So I’m going to make sure my blood counts.”
Ava responded.
“By hurting Elena?”
“I never hurt Elena.”
“You scared her into leaving.”
“I gave her a reason to make the intelligent choice.”
Adrian’s fist tightened on the table.
The recording continued.
Ava said, “And the baby?”
Julian paused.
“What baby?”
“Don’t.”
Another long silence.
Then Julian said something that made Elena stop breathing.
“As long as Adrian never legally acknowledges that child, nothing changes.”
Mara paused the audio.
“That matters.”
Adrian looked at her.
“How much?”
“Potentially everything.”
She opened the trust documents.
“If Julian knowingly interfered with recognition of a Mercer descendant for financial gain, the trust’s misconduct clause could remove him entirely.”
Vivian stared.
“Richard added that?”
“Apparently.”
Mara resumed the recording.
Ava said, “I’m telling Adrian.”
Julian laughed.
“No, you’re not.”
“Watch me.”
“You tell Adrian, and he burns the entire family to the ground.”
“Maybe it needs burning.”
The recording abruptly ended.
No confession to harming Ava.
No explicit order.
But proof of motive.
Proof of deception.
And proof that Julian knew Elena’s pregnancy threatened his financial ambitions.
Adrian leaned back.
“Send this to the board.”
Mara hesitated.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because if we reveal our strongest evidence now, Julian and Victoria know exactly what we possess.”
“We need more.”
Elena looked at Daniel.
“You were there when some of this happened.”
Daniel nodded.
“Will you testify?”
Vivian looked at him sharply.
Daniel sighed.
“Yes.”
Adrian studied him.
“Why?”
“Because I’m tired.”
“That’s not good enough.”
Daniel gave a faint bitter smile.
“I have a daughter.”
No one expected the answer.
“She’s twenty-one.”
Elena frowned.
“I didn’t know.”
“Almost nobody does.”
Daniel looked down.
“She stopped speaking to me two years ago.”
“Why?”
“She discovered what I did for a living.”
Adrian’s voice hardened.
“You mean lying?”
“Among other things.”
Daniel looked toward the bedroom.
“When I saw your children on that plane, I realized something.”
“What?”
“That every person in this mess keeps saying they’re doing terrible things for family.”
“But the children are the only ones behaving like family means something good.”
No one spoke.
Daniel looked at Elena.
“I helped separate you from Adrian.”
“I can’t undo that.”
“But I can tell the truth.”
Mara began arranging legal protections.
A voluntary statement.
Immunity negotiations if necessary.
Preservation orders for corporate data.
DNA testing for Adrian and the twins was scheduled privately that morning.
Adrian hesitated before the test.
Elena noticed.
“Nervous?”
“Yes.”
“You already know.”
“I know.”
“Then why nervous?”
He looked toward Oliver and Lucy playing with wooden puzzles in the hotel sitting room.
“Because knowing in my heart and seeing it on paper are different.”
Elena understood.
The samples were collected.
Expedited results would arrive within hours.
While they waited, Vivian approached Elena.
“May I ask you something?”
Elena looked cautious.
“What?”
“Did Ava know you were having twins?”
“Yes.”
Vivian smiled faintly.
“Did she choose their names?”
“No.”
“She tried.”
“What did she suggest?”
Elena laughed quietly.
“For a boy, Maximilian Danger Mercer.”
Vivian actually smiled.
“That sounds like Ava.”
“For a girl, Cleopatra Moonbeam.”
Vivian covered her mouth.
Adrian overheard.
“She suggested Danger?”
Elena looked at him.
“She said it should literally be his middle name so he could tell people Danger was his middle name.”
Adrian laughed.
It was the first genuine laugh Elena had heard from him since he boarded the plane.
Oliver looked over.
“What’s funny?”
“Your aunt Ava.”
“I have an aunt?”
Adrian’s smile faded slightly.
“You did.”
Oliver absorbed that.
“Is she in heaven?”
Elena nodded.
“Yes.”
Oliver thought.
“Does heaven have Christmas?”
Adrian answered.
“If Ava’s there, it probably has too much Christmas.”
Oliver seemed satisfied.
Two hours later, Mara received the laboratory report.
She looked at Adrian.
“Ready?”
He stood beside Elena.
She nodded.
Mara opened the document.
Probability of paternity exceeded 99.99 percent for both children.
Adrian stared at the page.
He had expected relief.
Instead he felt grief for every bedtime he had missed.
Every first word.
Every fever.
Every laugh.
Every Christmas.
Elena touched his hand.
Only briefly.
But she did.
“They’re yours.”
Adrian looked at her.
“I know.”
Oliver ran into the room holding a toy airplane.
“Old friend!”
Adrian crouched.
Oliver stopped.
Adrian smiled.
“You can call me something else now.”
Oliver looked at Elena.
She nodded.
The boy turned back.
“Dad?”
Adrian’s eyes closed for half a second.
“Yes.”
Oliver smiled.
“Dad, Lucy broke the puzzle.”
From across the room Lucy shouted.
“I did not!”
Adrian laughed through tears.
Then Mara’s phone rang.
Her smile vanished when she answered.
She listened.
“What?”
Adrian stood.
“What happened?”
Mara ended the call.
“The Mercer board just called an emergency meeting.”
“When?”
“Today.”
“Why?”
May you like
Mara looked at Vivian.
“Julian has filed a petition declaring Adrian mentally unfit to manage the family trust.”
