Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Version of the Truth

Adrian opened the door but did not invite Vivian inside.
She stood in the hallway wearing a camel-colored coat over an immaculate black dress.
At sixty-three, Vivian Mercer still carried herself like every room belonged to her.
Tonight she looked older.
Not weaker.
Just tired.
“You came alone?”
“Yes.”
Adrian glanced toward the elevator.
His security team confirmed the hallway was clear.
Vivian looked past him and saw Elena.
Their eyes met.
Four years vanished instantly.
Elena remembered Vivian entering her small apartment without removing her gloves.
She remembered the envelope placed on her kitchen table.
She remembered being told that love was not enough to justify ruining Adrian’s future.
“Hello, Elena.”
“Vivian.”
“I owe you an explanation.”
Elena’s laugh was quiet.
“You owe me about four years of them.”
Adrian stepped aside.
Vivian entered.
Her eyes fell on Benny.
The opened seams revealed the empty hiding places.
“So you found it.”
“You knew?” Adrian asked.
“I knew Ava suspected Julian.”
“Did you know about the card?”
“No.”
“The key?”
Vivian shook her head.
Adrian’s anger sharpened.
“Then how did you know there was something in the bear?”
Vivian sat slowly.
“Because Ava confronted me the night Elena left.”
Elena stared.
“She told you?”
“She told me I had made the worst mistake of my life.”
Vivian looked at Elena.
“She was right.”
The admission surprised everyone.
Adrian remained standing.
“Start talking.”
Vivian folded her hands.
“When Elena became pregnant, Julian came to me first.”
Elena felt cold.
“He told you?”
“Yes.”
“How did he know?”
“I don’t know.”
Adrian scoffed.
“You never asked?”
“I believed he had heard it from someone inside your social circle.”
“I hadn’t told anyone.”
“Elena had told Ava.”
“And Ava would never tell Julian.”
Vivian nodded reluctantly.
“I know that now.”
She continued.
“Julian said Elena intended to use the pregnancy to force a marriage.”
Elena stared at her.
“You believed that?”
“I believed what fit my fear.”
Vivian did not look away.
“That is not an excuse.”
“At least we agree on something.”
Vivian accepted the blow.
“At the time, Mercer Holdings was vulnerable.”
“Your father had been dead less than a year.”
“Several lenders were threatening to pull financing.”
“The board doubted Adrian.”
“Julian convinced me that a public scandal would destroy the company.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“So you chose the company.”
“I chose what I thought would protect everything your father built.”
“You chose it over my child.”
“I did not know there were two.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“As if one would have been acceptable collateral.”
Vivian looked down.
“No.”
For the first time, Elena saw regret rather than calculation.
Vivian continued.
“Julian showed me the same false trust clause he later showed Elena.”
Adrian frowned.
“You believed it?”
“It looked authentic.”
“You were a trustee.”
“I was grieving.”
Vivian’s voice cracked slightly.
“I was not thinking clearly.”
“And Julian knew that.”
“Yes.”
Mara leaned forward.
“What exactly did you authorize Daniel to do?”
Vivian looked uncomfortable.
“I told him to offer Elena money.”
Elena’s eyes hardened.
“How much?”
“Two million dollars.”
Adrian stared at his mother.
Vivian continued quickly.
“Elena refused before Daniel could present the final amount.”
“You sent Daniel to buy the mother of my child out of my life.”
“Yes.”
The honesty almost made it worse.
“Did you authorize the forged confidentiality agreement?”
“No.”
“Did you authorize him to tell Elena I refused to see her?”
“No.”
Elena studied Vivian.
“Did you tell me Adrian was marrying Caroline?”
Vivian’s face tightened.
“I believed he would eventually marry someone from our circle.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Vivian looked at her.
“I suggested Caroline.”
“You told me the engagement announcement was already planned.”
Vivian closed her eyes briefly.
“That was untrue.”
Adrian turned away.
Elena’s voice became cold.
“You watched a pregnant twenty-four-year-old woman believe the father of her child had rejected her.”
Vivian whispered.
“Yes.”
“And you let me walk out of that apartment thinking I had nowhere left to turn.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Vivian’s eyes shone.
“Because I thought if you hated us enough, you would stay away.”
Elena shook her head.
“You succeeded.”
Vivian looked toward the adjoining room.
“Not completely.”
The words made Elena stand.
“Do not talk about my children like they are proof your plan failed.”
Vivian immediately nodded.
“You’re right.”
Adrian watched his mother.
This was not how Vivian Mercer normally behaved.
She apologized strategically.
Tonight, she seemed to be surrendering.
“Why now?” Adrian asked.
Vivian understood.
“Why confess?”
“Yes.”
She opened her handbag.
“I found this three weeks ago.”
She handed him an envelope.
Inside was a photocopy of a bank statement.
Several payments had been highlighted.
Daniel Reed.
Mark Ellison.
Grantwell Development.
North Peak Charter.
All connected to companies controlled by Julian.
Mara scanned it.
“This goes back almost five years.”
Vivian nodded.
“I realized Julian had orchestrated far more than I knew.”
“Why not tell me immediately?”
“Because I confronted him.”
Adrian stared.
“You did what?”
“I confronted Julian.”
“When?”
“Two weeks ago.”
“And?”
Vivian’s face became grave.
“He denied everything.”
“Then Grantwell suddenly scheduled Elena for a mandatory Aspen meeting.”
Elena froze.
“My Christmas retreat.”
“There was never a retreat.”
Elena’s stomach dropped.
Her employer had told her senior staff members were spending Christmas week in Aspen reviewing a development acquisition.
Vivian continued.
“I had Daniel intercept the flight.”
Elena laughed in disbelief.
“You diverted me to protect me?”
“Yes.”
“Without telling me?”
Vivian lowered her gaze.
“I recognize the irony.”
Adrian picked up his phone.
“We need to find Julian.”
Vivian shook her head.
“He won’t answer.”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
Mara looked at the memory card.
“Then tomorrow we open Box 417.”
Vivian’s face changed.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because that may be exactly what Julian expects.”
Adrian stared at her.
“How could he know about the box?”
Vivian swallowed.
“Ava told one other person about it.”
“Who?”
Vivian looked toward the sleeping children.
Then back at Adrian.
“Your father.”
Adrian’s face went completely still.
“My father died before Elena left.”
Vivian nodded.
“I know.”
“Then how could Ava tell him?”
Vivian reached into her handbag again.
She removed a sealed envelope.

On the front, in the handwriting of Adrian’s dead father, were three words.
FOR MY SON.
