Chapter 13 - The Boardroom Trap

Julian moved faster than anyone expected.
By noon, Mercer Holdings’ boardroom in Manhattan had filled virtually and in person.
Adrian attended from Denver by secure video.
Elena stayed off camera with the children.
Vivian sat beside Adrian.
Mara occupied the seat on his other side.
Julian appeared on the main screen from an undisclosed location.
He looked calm.
Well rested.
Almost amused.
“Adrian.”
“Julian.”
“I’m sorry this has become necessary.”
Adrian leaned back.
“You’ve spent five years destroying my personal life and today is where you discovered concern?”
Julian smiled faintly.
“I have no idea what you mean.”
Mara whispered.
“Let him talk.”
Julian addressed the board.
“My brother boarded a private aircraft without authorization.”
“He interfered with the flight crew.”
“He threatened family employees.”
“He has now secluded himself in Denver with a former romantic partner and two children whose paternity was unverified when this crisis began.”
Adrian interrupted.
“It’s verified now.”
The room shifted.
Julian’s smile disappeared for half a second.
Adrian placed the DNA report on camera.
“They are my biological children.”
Several board members began speaking at once.
Julian recovered quickly.
“This only emphasizes the need for careful management.”
Vivian spoke.
“Careful management?”
Julian looked toward her.
“Mother.”
“Don’t call me that today.”
Adrian glanced at Vivian.
She continued.
“You knew Elena was pregnant.”
Julian’s expression remained neutral.
“I heard rumors.”
“You created false trust documents.”
“That is an extraordinary accusation.”
“We have evidence.”
Julian looked directly into the camera.
“Then present it.”
Mara touched Adrian’s arm.
Not yet.
Julian knew they had something.
He wanted to know how much.
The board chairman cleared his throat.
“This meeting concerns Adrian’s fitness, not historical family disputes.”
Adrian nodded.
“Then let’s discuss fitness.”
He opened a folder.
“Five years ago, Julian secretly established corporate structures designed to increase his control over Mercer voting shares.”
Julian interrupted.
“Standard estate planning.”
“Using twelve million dollars routed through companies your mother controlled?”
Silence.
Julian’s eyes changed.
Only slightly.
But Adrian saw it.
“So you found Victoria.”
Adrian smiled coldly.
“Thank you.”
Julian realized his mistake.
Several board members looked confused.
The chairman asked, “Who is Victoria?”
Adrian answered.
“Julian’s biological mother.”
The room erupted.
Julian’s face hardened.
Mara leaned toward Adrian.
“He’ll end the meeting.”
She was right.
Julian stood.
“This has become inappropriate.”
Adrian spoke quickly.
“You wanted my fitness reviewed.”
“So review it.”
He looked into the camera.
“I discovered yesterday that I have two four-year-old children.”
“I learned that members of my own family intentionally prevented me from knowing they existed.”
“I learned my communications were monitored.”
“My former partner was deceived.”
“My sister collected evidence before her death.”
Adrian paused.
“And yes, I am angry.”
He looked directly at the board.
“If anger makes me unfit when people target children for financial gain, remove me.”
No one spoke.
“But before you vote, understand what you’re voting for.”
Adrian lifted another document.
“The Mercer Continuity Trust gives my children beneficiary rights immediately upon verified paternity.”
Julian’s attorney interrupted.
“That interpretation is disputed.”
Mara smiled.
“No, it isn’t.”
She displayed Richard Mercer’s signed amendment.
The board’s general counsel examined it.
His face changed.
“This appears valid.”
Julian stared.
Adrian continued.
“And under Section Twelve, intentional interference with recognition of a legitimate descendant creates grounds for immediate removal of any beneficiary responsible.”
Julian’s composure finally cracked.
“You’re accusing me based on a dead woman’s paranoia.”
Adrian’s eyes sharpened.
“Which dead woman?”
Julian stopped.
The question had been deliberate.
Adrian had not mentioned Ava’s involvement in the evidence.
Julian had.
Mara noticed.
So did Vivian.
Adrian leaned toward the camera.
“I said my sister collected evidence.”
“I never said she suspected you.”
Julian recovered too late.
“You’ve accused me for twelve hours through your attorneys.”
“No.”
Mara smiled slightly.
“We haven’t contacted you once.”
The chairman looked uncomfortable.
Julian ended his video connection.
The screen went black.
The meeting dissolved into chaos.
Twenty minutes later, the board postponed all decisions and appointed independent counsel.
It was not victory.
But Julian’s attempt to remove Adrian had failed.
For now.
Elena waited in the adjoining room.
When Adrian entered, Oliver ran toward him.
“Dad!”
The word still stopped him every time.
He lifted the boy.
“How was your meeting?”
“Boring.”
“Did you win?”
Adrian looked at Elena.
“Not yet.”
Lucy held Benny up.
“Benny says you need lunch.”
“He’s smart.”
“He likes grilled cheese.”
Adrian nodded.
“A respected financial strategy.”
For one hour, the world became almost normal.
They ate grilled cheese sandwiches.
Oliver spilled tomato soup.
Lucy accused Benny of stealing her crackers.
Adrian learned that Oliver hated crusts.
He learned Lucy insisted sandwiches be cut diagonally.
He learned Elena drank coffee she had reheated three times because she never finished it while hot.
The small details hurt more than the big revelations.
After lunch, Elena found Adrian alone near the window.
“You did well.”
“At the meeting?”
“With them.”
He looked toward the children.
“I don’t know what I’m doing.”
“Nobody does.”
“You did.”
Elena smiled faintly.
“I once called the pediatrician because Oliver hiccuped for eleven minutes.”
Adrian laughed.
“Eleven?”
“I timed it.”
“You were terrifyingly organized even in panic.”
“I still am.”
His smile faded.
“Elena.”
She knew the question.
“What?”
“Why didn’t you come back after the twins were born?”
She looked down.
“Ava wanted me to.”
“Then why?”
“Because two weeks after they were born, I received photographs.”
“What photographs?”
“You.”
“With Caroline.”
Adrian frowned.
“At a charity event?”
“You were kissing her.”
His expression changed.
“I never kissed Caroline.”
Elena looked at him.
“I saw it.”
“Show me.”
“I deleted them years ago.”
“Who sent them?”
“Unknown number.”
Adrian cursed softly.
Elena continued.
“There was also a message.”
“What did it say?”
She remembered every word.
ADRIAN HAS MOVED ON.
IF YOU LOVE YOUR CHILDREN, LET HIM.
Adrian closed his eyes.
“It was staged.”
“Maybe.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“It had to be.”
Elena’s phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar.
She answered cautiously.
“Hello?”
A woman spoke.
“Ms. Hart?”
“Yes.”
“This is Detective Rachel Monroe with Denver Police.”
Elena looked at Adrian.
The detective continued.
“We located an abandoned vehicle connected to Daniel Reed.”
Elena glanced toward the conference room.
Daniel was supposed to be under guard.
She turned.
The room was empty.
Her blood went cold.
“When?”
“Twenty minutes ago.”
Adrian ran into the hall.
Daniel’s security escort lay unconscious near a service stairwell.
Elena’s phone remained at her ear.
Detective Monroe continued.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“We found a note inside the vehicle.”
Elena swallowed.
“What does it say?”
