Chapter 16 - The House Goes Dark

Adrian found Elena’s hand.
“Stay with me.”
“I am.”
Oliver clung to her coat.
Lucy held Benny so tightly his fabric face disappeared beneath her arm.
Security radios crackled.
The estate had lost external power.
Backup generators should have activated automatically.
They had not.
Mara used her phone flashlight.
“Everyone remain where you are.”
Julian laughed once in the darkness.
“That won’t help.”
Adrian turned toward his voice.
“What did she do?”
“I don’t know.”
“You said she planned something.”
“She told me tonight would end the succession fight.”
“How?”
“She wouldn’t say.”
Vivian’s voice came from across the room.
“Victoria.”
No answer.
“She’s gone,” someone said.
Emergency lights flickered.
The place where Victoria had been standing was empty.
Adrian’s security chief spoke through the radio.
“East corridor breached.”
“By whom?”
“Unknown.”
“Lock down the children.”
Adrian looked toward Elena.
“There’s a secure room downstairs.”
“No basement.”
“It’s not a basement.”
“No.”
“Elena.”
“The children stay where I can see exits.”
Adrian nodded immediately.
“Fine.”
Again, he did not argue.
Security formed a protective group around them.
Julian remained nearby.
Adrian looked at him.
“Stay away from them.”
Julian raised both hands.
“I understand.”
A loud crash sounded somewhere upstairs.
Oliver whispered.
“Dad?”
Adrian crouched.
“Yeah?”
“Are bad guys here?”
Adrian looked into his son’s frightened eyes.
He chose his words carefully.
“Some adults are making bad decisions.”
Oliver considered this.
“Really bad?”
“Yes.”
“But we have people helping us.”
Oliver nodded.
Lucy whispered.
“Benny is brave.”
Adrian touched the bear.
“So are you.”
The backup generator finally started.
Lights returned in sections.
Mara checked security cameras.
Several feeds were dead.
One remained active near the west entrance.
A vehicle was leaving.
Vivian stared.
“That’s Victoria.”
Adrian looked at Julian.
“Where would she go?”
Julian shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Mara’s phone suddenly received a flood of notifications as the network returned.
Her face went pale.
“She released it.”
“What?”
“Photos.”
Elena’s stomach dropped.
Online posts were appearing.
Photographs of Adrian with Oliver and Lucy.
Elena on the private jet.
The paternity report.
Fragments of the trust documents.
A headline had already been published by a financial gossip site.
MERCER BILLIONAIRE HID SECRET TWINS FOR FOUR YEARS.
Elena stared.
“Hid?”
Adrian’s expression became furious.
“They’re blaming me.”
Mara shook her head.
“This is designed to destabilize you.”
More headlines appeared.
WHO IS ELENA HART?
THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MERCER SUCCESSION CRISIS.
Elena felt nauseated.
Four years of protecting the children’s privacy had disappeared in minutes.
Adrian looked at her.
“I’m sorry.”
She stared at the screen.
“This isn’t your fault.”
The words surprised them both.
For years she had blamed Adrian for everything.
Tonight she finally understood how many hands had shaped the lie.
Julian sat heavily.
“She won.”
Adrian turned.
“No.”
“She wanted public chaos.”
“She has it.”
Adrian looked at the children.
“No.”
He stood.
“This ends now.”
Mara frowned.
“What are you doing?”
“Press conference.”
“Elena?”
Adrian looked at her.
“I won’t say anything about you or them without your permission.”
She studied him.
That sentence mattered.
“What would you say?”
“The truth.”
“Which part?”
“That I did not know my children existed.”
“That you protected them after being manipulated by people connected to my family.”
“That they are not corporate assets.”
“That nobody gets to treat them like a succession strategy.”
Mara nodded slowly.
“That could work.”
Vivian spoke.
“I’ll join you.”
Adrian stared.
“Why?”
“Because the person who first pushed Elena away should say so publicly.”
Elena looked at Vivian.
“You would admit it?”
“Yes.”
“You could destroy your reputation.”
Vivian smiled sadly.
“Perhaps it deserves improvement through honesty.”
Julian laughed bitterly.
“You think confession fixes this?”
Vivian turned toward him.
“No.”
“But hiding created it.”
Julian looked away.
At eight forty-five, cameras gathered outside Mercer House.
Reporters stood beyond the gates.
A live statement was arranged.
Adrian stepped to the podium.
Elena remained inside with the children.
Vivian stood beside him.
Adrian looked directly into the cameras.
“The reports released tonight concern two four-year-old children.”
“I will therefore say only what is necessary.”
He paused.
“They are my children.”
“I learned that fact yesterday.”
“Their mother did not conceal them for financial gain.”
“She was deceived into believing I had rejected her pregnancy.”
Vivian stepped forward.
“I was part of that deception.”
Reporters erupted.
Vivian continued.
“Five years ago, I acted out of fear and pride.”
“I allowed Elena Hart to believe she was unwelcome in our family.”
“That decision was wrong.”
Inside the house, Elena watched the broadcast.
Lucy sat in her lap.
Oliver leaned against her shoulder.
Adrian continued outside.
“No trust.”
“No company.”
“No inheritance is more important than the privacy and safety of my children.”
“I am requesting that every media organization refrain from publishing their school, home, or private information.”
Then Adrian did something no one expected.
“Effective immediately, I am taking temporary leave from Mercer Holdings.”
Mara stared from beside the cameras.
Vivian turned toward him.
Julian, watching inside, looked stunned.
Adrian continued.
“My first responsibility right now is not a corporation.”
“It is my family.”
Elena felt tears rise.
Not because he chose her.
He had not asked her for romance.
He had not demanded forgiveness.
He had simply chosen to show up.
The press conference ended.
Adrian returned inside.
Elena waited near the entrance.
“You stepped down.”
“Temporarily.”
“Because of us?”
“Because I’ve spent my entire life believing I had to protect the company first.”
He looked at Oliver and Lucy.
“I’m done making that mistake.”
Before Elena could respond, Julian’s phone rang.
He checked the screen.
His face went white.
Adrian noticed.
“What?”
Julian slowly lifted his eyes.
“It’s Victoria.”
“Answer.”
Julian did.
His mother’s voice came through.
“Turn on the television.”
Mara switched on a nearby screen.
A prerecorded video appeared.
Victoria sat in an unknown room.
Behind her hung the Mercer family crest.
She smiled.
“If you are watching this, Adrian chose sentiment over power.”
“Exactly as I knew he would.”
Julian whispered.
“Mother, what did you do?”
Victoria continued.
“There is one final document Richard Mercer never told you about.”
Mara froze.
May you like
Victoria held up a folder.
“And by midnight, Mercer Holdings will no longer belong to any of you.”
