Chapter 11 - The Price of Being an Heir

Elena stared at the dark phone screen.

Her first instinct was immediate.

“No.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I agree.”

Vivian stood.

“If Victoria goes public—”

Elena turned.

“I don’t care about your stock price.”

“I wasn’t talking about the company.”

Vivian looked toward the bedroom.

“I was talking about the children.”

Elena paused.

Vivian continued.

“The moment their identities become public, they stop being anonymous four-year-olds.”

“They become Mercer heirs.”

“Reporters will follow them.”

“Photographers.”

“People who want money.”

“People who want influence.”

Elena hated that Vivian was right.

For four years, Oliver and Lucy had attended a small preschool where the biggest crisis involved lost crayons.

They had ordinary friends.

Ordinary birthday parties.

Ordinary scraped knees.

The Mercer name would change all of that.

Adrian looked at Mara.

“Can we stop publication?”

“Depends where she releases it.”

“Court order?”

“Possible after the fact.”

“Not reliable beforehand.”

Elena paced.

“Why does she want us at the estate?”

Daniel answered.

“Control.”

“That’s too simple.”

“Victoria has waited thirty years to humiliate this family.”

Vivian’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t pretend you understand her.”

“I worked for her longer than you know.”

Everyone turned.

Adrian frowned.

“How long?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Since before your father died.”

Vivian stared.

“You told me Julian hired you.”

“He did.”

“But Victoria was behind him.”

Daniel nodded.

Elena shook her head.

“Then why should we believe anything you say?”

“You shouldn’t.”

Daniel looked exhausted.

“But you should verify it.”

Mara opened the ledger.

“We can.”

For the next two hours, they reconstructed years of payments.

Victoria financed shell companies.

Those companies funded Julian’s quiet takeover attempts.

Daniel handled family-office logistics.

Mark Ellison created forged legal materials.

Matthew Cole built corporate structures under orders he believed came from legitimate Mercer interests.

And Grantwell became the perfect place to hide money.

But one question remained.

Why Elena?

Matthew finally answered.

“Your job gave them access to your travel.”

Elena stared.

“My addresses?”

“Yes.”

“My payroll?”

“Yes.”

“My emergency contacts?”

“Yes.”

“My children’s information?”

Matthew looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

Adrian stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

“You put my children inside a surveillance system.”

Matthew did not defend himself.

“I thought I was protecting them.”

“Everyone in this family seems to hurt people while calling it protection.”

The sentence silenced the room.

Even Vivian looked down.

Elena turned to Matthew.

“Did you give Victoria their school?”

“No.”

“Julian?”

“No.”

“Who had access?”

“HR.”

“Travel.”

“Executive administration.”

Mara frowned.

“Dozens of people.”

Elena’s chest tightened.

Adrian looked at her.

“We change everything tonight.”

“School?”

“If necessary.”

“Apartment?”

“Yes.”

“My job?”

“You’re not going back.”

Elena’s eyes sharpened.

“You don’t decide that.”

“No.”

He caught himself.

“You’re right.”

He took a breath.

“I’m asking you not to go back until we understand who had access.”

Elena’s anger softened slightly.

“Better.”

Adrian nodded.

He was learning.

Slowly.

At three in the morning, Vivian finally left for a separate suite.

Daniel remained under security supervision.

Matthew was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Mara stayed in the conference room with the files.

Adrian returned to the children’s room.

Elena stood by the window.

Snow had begun falling.

“Can’t sleep?” he asked.

“No.”

“Me either.”

Lucy stirred.

She opened her eyes.

“Mom?”

“I’m here.”

Lucy saw Adrian.

Her expression brightened sleepily.

“Old friend.”

Adrian smiled.

“That’s me.”

She reached toward Benny.

Elena handed the repaired bear back.

Lucy hugged it.

“Did you fix him?”

Adrian nodded.

“He’s tougher than he looks.”

Lucy looked at him seriously.

“Are you my daddy?”

The room became completely silent.

Elena felt her heart stop.

Adrian did not move.

Lucy continued.

“Oliver says you maybe are.”

From the other bed came Oliver’s voice.

“I said probably.”

His eyes remained closed.

Elena almost laughed despite everything.

Lucy looked back at Adrian.

“Are you?”

Adrian crouched beside the bed.

He looked at Elena first.

She did not stop him.

“I think I am.”

Lucy considered that.

“You think?”

“We’re making sure.”

“How?”

Adrian glanced at Elena.

“Grown-up science.”

Lucy accepted this.

“Okay.”

Then she held Benny toward him.

“If you’re my daddy, you have to know Benny’s birthday.”

Adrian pretended to think.

“December twenty-fourth.”

Lucy gasped.

“How did you know?”

“Because Benny used to live with me.”

She sat up.

“For real?”

“For real.”

Oliver opened his eyes.

“Did Mom live with you too?”

Elena stared at the ceiling.

Adrian smiled faintly.

“Yes.”

Oliver grinned.

“Then you’re definitely our dad.”

Elena covered her mouth to hide a laugh.

Adrian’s eyes filled unexpectedly.

He looked away.

Lucy reached out.

Her small hand touched his sleeve.

“You can be sad.”

Adrian looked back.

She repeated the words she had spoken on the plane.

“You look sad.”

His voice broke slightly.

“I missed something important.”

Lucy frowned.

“What?”

“You.”

She stared at him.

Then she leaned forward and wrapped both arms around his neck.

Adrian froze.

Elena watched his entire body go still.

Then he carefully hugged his daughter.

Oliver climbed out of bed.

“Me too.”

He joined them.

For the first time in four years, Elena allowed herself to imagine what life might have looked like if nobody had interfered.

The thought hurt.

But it also created something she had not expected.

Hope.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand.

Mara had sent a message.

WE FOUND AVA’S FINAL FILE.

Elena gently pulled Adrian’s attention toward the screen.

May you like

Another message appeared.

IT’S A RECORDING OF JULIAN.
