Chapter 11: The Queen's Visit

Chapter 11: The Queen's Visit

Locked deep inside the secure visitor holding facility of the federal penitentiary, Evangelina sat erect behind a reinforced glass partition, her hands trembling despite her absolute refusal to show weakness.

The heavy steel door at the end of the corridor swung open with a hollow clang, and Renata walked into the sterile visitation room.

She wore a simple, elegant navy blue blazer, carrying no luggage, no clearance-rack dresses, and no hesitation in her stride. She sat down opposite Evangelina and picked up the heavy plastic telephone receiver attached to the steel frame.

Evangelina slowly lifted her own receiver, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated venom.

"You think you've won something, you little nobody," Evangelina hissed through the small intercom speaker, her voice dripping with venom. "You'll never be one of us. You'll always be an outsider from the slums."

May you like

Renata smiled faintly, her expression entirely serene and untouched by the older woman's hatred.

"You're right, Evangelina," Renata replied softly. "I'm not one of you. And I never wanted to be." She stood up gracefully, placed her receiver back on the cradle, and turned toward the exit without looking back once.
