Chapter 5: Slammed Doors
Evangelina refused to accept defeat sitting down; her entire life was built on the unshakeable, arrogant belief that the Ibarra name was completely above the law.
At 7:00 AM the following morning, she dialed the personal, unlisted number of the federal district magistrate—a man she had dined with, bribed, and manipulated for over a decade. She expected him to pick up on the first ring with an obsequious greeting, ready to fix whatever administrative glitch had occurred.
Instead, a cold, automated voice informed her with mechanical precision that the subscriber's line had been disconnected pursuant to an ongoing judicial investigation.
Desperate, her hands shaking as she held the gold-plated smartphone, she called the director of national commerce. He picked up, but his voice sounded hollow, distant, and completely devoid of warmth.
"Evangelina," he said flatly, cutting her off before she could speak. "Don't ever call this number again. My hands are tied. The dossier presented against your family has direct authorization from international financial watchdogs. Even the president's office cannot intervene."
"You owe me!" Evangelina shrieked into the phone, her face contorted with rage. "My family built your political career from the ground up!"

"Your family built on sand, Evangelina," the director replied coldly before hanging up.
For the first time in her life, the matriarch of the Ibarra dynasty realized that money wasn't a shield anymore. It was evidence.
