Chapter 8: Allies from the Shadows
As Renata walked out of the heavy wrought-iron gates of the Las Lomas estate for the very last time, a sleek black sedan idling by the curb flashed its headlights twice in recognition.
She opened the passenger door and slid smoothly inside. Behind the wheel sat Mateo, a seasoned veteran investigator who had spent twenty years inside Mexico’s elite financial intelligence unit before retiring to private practice.
"How did it go inside?" Mateo asked, handing her a cold bottle of mineral water without turning his eyes from the rearview mirror.
"They're tearing each other apart," Renata replied, taking a small, measured sip. "Alonso is desperately trying to figure out how to pin everything on his mother, and Evangelina is calling every corrupt contact she has left on speed dial."

"Well, your contacts in Iztapalapa have been busy too," Mateo smiled, tapping a thick manila folder resting on the dashboard. "Your former colleagues at the audit firm verified the secondary offshore traces. The international press picked up the wire stories an hour ago. By noon, the Ibarra name won't just be broke—it will be completely toxic."
Renata looked out the passenger window at the sprawling city beneath them as the sun broke through the morning fog, burning away the shadows over the valley.
