Chapter 1 - The Lion’s DenThe crystal chandeliers above seemed to dim, the lively hum of the string quartet fading into white noise. Adrian Whitmore stood perfectly still, the weight of the boy’s words anchoring him to the polished marble floor.

My dad is alive.

Adrian’s gaze dragged upward, across the sea of silk dresses, tailored tuxedos, and the suffocating opulence of the Whitmore Foundation’s annual gala. There, at the far end of the room, stood Charles Whitmore. His stepfather was holding a crystal flute of champagne, throwing his head back in a practiced, charming laugh. Beside him, Adrian’s mother, Eleanor, looked fragile but happy, completely oblivious to the monster standing at her shoulder.

For eight years, Adrian had mourned. For eight years, he had lived with the crushing guilt that his brother had burned to ash to save his life. And Charles had orchestrated the entire mourning process. Charles had paid for the empty casket. Charles had placed a comforting hand on Adrian’s shoulder as it was lowered into the earth.

A cold, lethal fury ignited in Adrian’s veins. It was a primal, consuming fire, but he knew he couldn’t let a single flicker of it show on his face. In the Whitmore empire, emotion was a weakness, and Charles was a predator who smelled blood from a mile away.

Adrian crouched down, placing his broad shoulders between Leo and the rest of the room, effectively shielding the boy from prying eyes. Up close, the resemblance to Scott was uncanny. The same defiant jaw, the same striking gray eyes that missed absolutely nothing.

"Leo," Adrian whispered, keeping his tone dead level despite the earthquake in his chest. "I need you to listen to me very carefully. You are safe now. I made a promise to your father, and I intend to keep it. But we cannot stay here. If those men see you..."

"They won't," Leo said, his small hands curling into fists. "I hid in the delivery trucks. But they're looking for me."

Adrian nodded slowly. He took off his bespoke tuxedo jacket and wrapped it around the boy's shivering shoulders. The jacket swallowed the child whole, but it covered his stained clothes and the blood on his knee.

"Keep your head down," Adrian instructed. "We’re going out through the kitchens."

Adrian stood, taking Leo’s hand. The boy's fingers were ice-cold. As casually as he could muster, Adrian turned his back on his stepfather and began walking toward the service doors. He moved with the smooth, unbothered arrogance of a billionaire heir who had simply had enough of the party. A few socialites tried to catch his eye, but Adrian offered only a curt, dismissive nod, his jaw clenched tight.

They reached the swinging doors of the kitchen. The heat of industrial ovens and the shouts of an overworked catering staff hit them instantly. Adrian wove through the stainless-steel prep tables, keeping Leo tucked firmly against his side. Waiters stepped out of his way, recognizing the young master of the house, too intimidated to question why he was dragging a disheveled child through their workspace.

"Mr. Whitmore."

Adrian froze.

Standing by the loading dock exit was Vance. Charles’s head of security. Vance was a mountain of a man with dead, shark-like eyes and a perfectly tailored suit that barely hid the bulge of a shoulder holster.

"Vance," Adrian said, his voice dripping with aristocratic boredom. "Getting some fresh air?"

Vance’s gaze slid from Adrian down to the bundle of tuxedo fabric clutching Adrian’s leg. "Just keeping the perimeter secure, sir. Your father wanted to ensure no... uninvited guests slipped in. There was a report of a runaway in the area."

Adrian’s pulse hammered against his ribs, but he forced a lazy, arrogant smirk onto his face. "A runaway? Here? Please. The only thing sneaking in here are the paparazzi. I'm taking my nephew home. He's had an accident playing in the gardens and ruined his clothes. Mother would have a heart attack if she saw the mud on him."

Vance didn't blink. "I wasn't aware you had a nephew, sir."

"You aren't paid to know my family tree, Vance. You're paid to stand by doors," Adrian snapped, channeling every ounce of his entitled billionaire persona. "Now step aside before I have Charles review your contract."

Vance’s jaw twitched. For a second, violence hung heavy in the air. But Adrian was a Whitmore, and Vance was still just a dog on Charles's leash. Slowly, Vance stepped aside. "Have a safe drive, sir."

Adrian didn't look back. He pushed through the heavy steel doors out into the cool, damp night air of the parking garage. His black Aston Martin was parked in the VIP bay. He clicked the fob, ushering Leo into the passenger seat before sliding behind the wheel. The V12 engine roared to life, a deep, guttural growl that echoed off the concrete walls.

As the car tore out of the garage and merged onto the neon-lit streets of the city, Adrian looked in the rearview mirror. No one was following them. Yet.

He glanced at Leo. The boy was staring at the dashboard, his hands tightly gripping the stainless-steel watch Adrian had given him.

"We made it," Leo whispered.

"Step one," Adrian replied, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. "Now, you're going to tell me exactly where my brother is."
