Chapter 5 - Blood and IronDawn broke over the Appalachian mountains, painting the sky in bruises of purple and red. Inside the cabin, the crackle of the fireplace was the only sound.

Adrian stood in the doorway of the bedroom, watching the scene unfold. Scott sat on the edge of the bed, weeping openly as he held Leo against his chest. The boy clung to his father’s neck as if letting go would make him vanish. It was a moment so profoundly private and sacred that Adrian felt like an intruder, yet he couldn't tear his eyes away. Eight years of grief were washing away in that single embrace.
After an hour, Leo finally fell asleep, exhausted by the emotional whirlwind. Scott gently laid him down, pulled the blanket up to the boy's chin, and walked out into the main living area. He moved with a limp, leaning heavily on a wooden cane Marcus had found in the shed, but there was a renewed strength in his posture.
He sat in the leather armchair across from Adrian. Marcus stood by the window, a rifle slung over his chest, keeping watch over the treeline.
"We need to talk about Anna," Adrian said, breaking the silence.
Scott’s jaw tightened, a muscle feathering in his cheek. "Charles took her. A year ago. They moved me to a different wing of Saint Matthew's the night they brought her in. I heard her screaming, Adrian. I fought until they broke three of my ribs and drugged me into a coma. When I woke up, she was gone. Vance told me they sold her to a private syndicate overseas to ensure my 'cooperation'."
Adrian’s fists clenched so hard his knuckles popped. "He sold his own daughter-in-law."
"Charles isn't family," Scott spat, his voice laced with pure venom. "He married mom for the company. When our father died, Charles realized the majority shares bypassed him and went to me. He couldn't access the offshore accounts without my biometric signature and my passwords. So, he orchestrated the crash."
"He cut the brakes," Adrian realized, the pieces finally clicking together. "He knew we were taking the mountain road to the retreat."
"Yes. But he didn't plan on you surviving. When I dragged you out, his fixers were already on the scene. They hit me over the head, threw a body double into the driver's seat, and set the car on fire. I woke up in a black site in Mexico." Scott looked down at his scarred hands. "He tortured me for years, Adrian. I gave him access to the minor accounts to buy time, but I never gave him the master key. I knew the moment I did, I was dead."
Adrian paced the wooden floorboards, his mind running a million miles an hour.
"He’s finalizing the merger with Horizon Tech this week," Adrian said, stopping to look at his brother. "It’s a fifty-billion-dollar deal. If it goes through, Charles will have enough leverage to liquidate the Whitmore Foundation entirely and run the board. He's making his final play. That's why he ordered you killed tonight. He thought he didn't need you anymore."
"He doesn't know you have me," Scott said softly. "Vance couldn't have identified you in the dark. To Charles, this looks like a random hit from a rival cartel or a disgruntled business partner."
A slow, dangerous smile crept onto Adrian's face. It was the smile of a predator.
"You're right. I walked out of that gala normally. As far as Charles knows, I went home, slept off my hangover, and I'm entirely ignorant of what happened at Saint Matthew's." Adrian turned to Marcus. "Marcus, scrub my car. Make sure my alibi is ironclad. Tomorrow morning, I am walking into the Whitmore Tower and sitting down for the board meeting like nothing happened."
Scott looked at his brother, seeing the cold, calculating billionaire that Adrian had been forced to become in his absence. "You're going back into the lion's den."
"I am the lion, Scott," Adrian said softly, his gray eyes flashing with lethal intent. "Charles thinks he controls the empire. But he forgot one thing. I've been learning his weaknesses for eight years. I know where the bodies are buried. I know which board members he's blackmailing."
Adrian picked up his jacket, sliding his arms into the tailored sleeves, instantly transforming back into the untouchable CEO.

"You stay here, heal, and watch over Leo. Marcus will secure the perimeter," Adrian ordered. "I am going to smile at Charles. I am going to shake his hand. And step by step, I am going to dismantle his life, seize back his assets, and find Anna. When I'm done with him, he won't just be poor. He'll be begging for a bullet."
Adrian opened the front door, stepping out into the crisp morning air. The storm had passed, leaving behind a clear, brilliant sky. The war had just begun, and the Whitmore brothers were finally fighting back.
