Chapter 16 - Fire and AshThe mountain air turned bitter cold as twilight painted the Appalachian ridge in deep shades of indigo and blood orange. Inside the cabin, the fireplace crackled, but outside, the silence was unnatural. The forest had gone dead quiet—no crickets, no rustling leaves, no wind through the pines.

Adrian stood by the darkened window, holding a pair of thermal night-vision binoculars.

"They're here," Adrian whispered over the tactical frequency.

Through the green-tinted lens, five thermal heat signatures emerged from the treeline five hundred yards out. They moved with military precision, keeping low, weapon barrels pointed downward. The Vanguard had arrived.

"I count five on the south approach," Adrian said calmly, pulling back from the window. "Marcus?"

"Three more on the north ridge," Marcus replied from his elevated perch in the loft, racking the bolt of his suppressed sniper rifle. "They brought heavy ordnance, Boss. I’m seeing thermite charges and assault shotguns. They aren't trying to capture anyone. They came to burn this place to the ground."

In the kitchen, Scott was wrapping Leo’s small hand around a tactical flashlight while Anna strapped a bulletproof vest over her sweaters.

"The cellar shaft," Scott said, his scarred face illuminated by the green glow of his laptop screen. "Dad built an old coal tunnel under the foundations that leads to a dry creek bed three hundred yards west. Anna, take Leo and go now."

"Not without you, Scott," Anna insisted, her fingers gripping his sleeve.

"I'm right behind you," Scott lied smoothly, giving her a fierce kiss on the lips before turning to Leo. "Remember what I taught you, buddy. Protect your mother."

Leo nodded bravely, his small hands clutching the stainless-steel watch in his pocket. Anna pulled the trapdoor open and guided Leo down into the dark, damp shaft.

CRASH!

The front windows shattered simultaneously as three flashbang grenades bounced across the hardwood floor.

"Down!" Adrian roared.

A blinding flash and a deafening roar shook the cabin, blowing out the remaining glass and filling the living room with thick smoke. Instantly, automatic weapons fire chewed through the log walls, splintering wood and destroying the furniture in a hail of lead.

Marcus fired two rapid shots from the loft. A mercenary crumpled through the front doorway, his rifle clattering against the floor.

"Thermal optics!" Adrian shouted. He kicked over the heavy oak dining table to form a makeshift barricade, drawing his dual suppressed pistols.

A hulking figure in black body armor burst through the kitchen door, raising an automated shotgun. Adrian slid across the slick floor, dodging a blast that obliterated the wall behind him, and fired three precise rounds into the soft armor plating under the mercenary's armpit. The man dropped like a sack of concrete.

From the hallway, Vance stepped into the doorway. His right hand was wrapped in heavy medical bandages from the sniper shot on the penthouse balcony, but his left held a modified submachine gun. His eyes were bloodshot, crazed with desperate mania.

"Where is he, Whitmore?" Vance snarled, spraying bullets across the living room. "Charles wants his head!"

"Come and get it yourself, Vance!" Adrian barked, popping out from behind the oak table and firing.

One of Adrian's rounds grazed Vance's cheek, leaving a trailing ribbon of crimson. Vance screamed in rage, pulling a thermite grenade from his chest rig and dropping it onto the wooden floorboards.

White-hot chemical fire instantly ignited, consuming the timber structure in seconds.

"The place is going down!" Marcus yelled from above as structural beams began to groan under the intense heat. "Adrian, move!"

Scott slammed his laptop shut, grabbed his cane, and headed for the cellar trapdoor. "Adrian! Out! Now!"

Adrian threw a smoke grenade toward Vance to force him back, grabbed Scott by his vest, and shoved him down the cellar shaft. Marcus slid down the wooden ladder right behind them. Adrian dropped through last, slamming the heavy iron trapdoor shut and throwing the deadbolt just as the ceiling above collapsed in a terrifying wall of fire.
