Chapter 8 - The Betrayal Within

The triumphant return flight to New York City should have been a highly celebratory, relaxing journey for the young CEO.
However, a deeply unsettling, nagging feeling continued to aggressively claw at the back of Elena's sharp mind.
Alexander Sterling was a highly arrogant man, but he was incredibly well-connected within the global banking sphere.
He could not have possibly known the exact, highly classified dates of her initial European shipping schedules without a mole operating deep inside her company.
She sat completely motionless in her massive corner office, staring blankly at the glowing, sprawling city skyline.
"Julian, completely lock down the entire top floor and forcefully disable all outgoing external communications," she suddenly ordered.
Julian instantly looked up from his complex digital spreadsheets, immediately sensing the dangerous shift in her tone.
"Is there an immediate security threat inside the building, Chairman?" he asked rapidly.
"We have a highly placed rat hiding within the newly restructured executive board," she confirmed.
"Sterling had highly precise, deeply guarded internal metrics that only five living people in this entire corporation possess," she explained.
She quickly pulled up a highly secure, encrypted diagram of the company's new executive organizational chart.
"I want you to heavily monitor the private offshore bank accounts of every single senior vice president," she instructed.
"I am going to intentionally leak a highly sensitive, entirely fabricated piece of financial data regarding our upcoming quarterly merger," she schemed.
She quickly typed out a highly confidential, completely fake email detailing a massive, secret buyout of a rival tech firm.
"I will send slightly different, uniquely coded variations of this fake information to the five main suspects," she said.
"Whichever version inevitably leaks to the global press will immediately expose the exact traitor who sold us out," she concluded.
For the next forty-eight grueling hours, the entire executive floor operated under a terrifying, heavy cloud of intense paranoia.
On the morning of the third day, a massive, breaking financial news alert violently flashed across the main television screens.
The fake merger story had heavily hit the press, citing a highly reliable, anonymous corporate insider.
Julian quickly cross-referenced the deeply specific financial numbers reported in the global article.
"The numbers match the exact, unique variation you deliberately sent to Marcus, the head of global corporate security," Julian revealed.
Elena's dark eyes narrowed into dangerous, razor-sharp slits of pure, unadulterated anger.

The imposing veteran who had forcefully dragged Victoria out of the lobby had been secretly playing both sides for massive profit.
"Bring Marcus to my private office immediately, and physically strip him of all his secure access badges," she commanded coldly.
