hapter 10: The Plea Offer
Four months later, Detective Reynolds called me into the District Attorney’s office.
The prosecutor, a sharp man named Davis, slid a piece of paper across the desk. "Preston’s defense team is offering a plea deal. He’ll plead guilty to a lesser charge of reckless endangerment. He’ll serve six months in county jail, three years probation."
I stared at the paper. "Six months? For plotting to ruin a little girl’s life and fracturing her skull?"
"It saves Sophie from having to testify," Davis pointed out gently. "Trials can be hard on kids."

"Sophie won't have to testify," I said, sliding the paper back to him. "You have the video. You have his ex-wife's testimony about his motives. You have the catering staff. Reject the plea. We go to trial."
Davis smiled slowly. "I was hoping you'd say that."
