Chapter 15: The Lamb and the Lion
A year later.
The scars on Sophie’s head were hidden beneath her growing hair. She was thriving in the fourth grade, playing soccer, and laughing louder than she ever had before.
We had moved to a beautiful little house in a quiet suburb. I started my own graphic design business, completely independent of my family’s money or influence. I hadn't spoken to my parents since the trial. They had become ghosts, living in their small condo, alienated from society and from the daughter they threw away.
One evening, Sophie and I sat on our porch swing, eating vanilla ice cream—her favorite.
"Mom?" she asked, leaning her head against my arm. "Are we safe now?"

I wrapped my arm tightly around her, looking out at the quiet, peaceful street. The wolves were locked away, and the enablers were powerless. We were no longer prey.
"Yes, my sweet girl," I whispered, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "We are completely safe."
