Chapter 3: The Brunch Arrest

Chapter 3: The Brunch Arrest

Sunday morning. The post-wedding brunch at the Whitmore was supposed to be a lavish affair for the newlyweds and their elite guests. I wasn't there, but Detective Reynolds told me exactly how it went down.

Preston and his new bride, Chloe, were sitting at the head of a mimosa-lined table. My parents were holding court, spinning a fabricated story about how my daughter had a "troubled history" and how Preston was a victim of my poor parenting.

They were mid-toast when four uniformed officers marched into the dining room.

"Preston Vance," Detective Reynolds announced, her voice booming over the clinking glasses. "You are under arrest for aggravated assault of a minor, child endangerment, and filing a false police report."

My mother shrieked. "You can't do this! Do you know who we are? He’s on his honeymoon!"

The officers didn't care. They pulled Preston from his chair, pinned his arms behind his back, and slapped the steel cuffs over his custom silk shirt.

"Call my lawyer!" Preston screamed, his voice cracking with genuine panic for the first time in his life. But as they marched him out through the lobby, Chloe just sat there, staring at the empty chair.
