Chapter 7: Healing Wounds

While the world outside was burning down around my family, the world inside my small apartment was quiet.

Sophie sat on the living room rug, carefully coloring a picture of a golden retriever. The white bandage on her head was a stark reminder of the nightmare, but her spirit remained unbroken.

"Mommy?" she asked without looking up from her crayons.

"Yes, baby?"

"Am I going to have to see Uncle Preston again?"

I knelt beside her, brushing a stray lock of hair away from her bandaged forehead. "No, sweetie. You never have to see him again. I promise."

She smiled, a genuine, warm smile, and went back to her coloring. For the first time in my life, I didn't feel the suffocating weight of my parents' expectations. The trauma of the wedding was horrific, but it had finally set us free.
