Chapter 2: The Emergency Room

The sterile scent of bleach and iodine in the emergency room was a stark contrast to the champagne and orchids of the wedding reception. I paced the linoleum floor, my ruined bridesmaid dress stiff with dried blood.

A doctor finally emerged from behind the beige curtain. "She’s going to be okay, Evelyn. Eight stitches, a mild concussion, and some severe bruising. But she’s incredibly lucky. A few inches lower, and that impact could have been fatal."

I collapsed into a plastic chair, burying my face in my hands. The relief washed over me in violent waves, followed instantly by a cold, burning rage.

My cell phone vibrated in my purse. Mother.

I rejected the call. It rang again. Father. Rejected.

Suddenly, a tall woman in a trench coat walked into the waiting area, flashing a gold badge. "Evelyn? I’m Detective Reynolds, CPD. We have your daughter’s jacket."

"Did you find it?" I asked, my voice hoarse.

"The iPhone? Yes. But more importantly, we reviewed the security footage from the Whitmore." The detective’s eyes softened with unexpected empathy. "I’ve been on the force for fifteen years. I have never seen anything so cold-blooded. We are going to nail him."
